Used car purchase: what's the offer etiquette?

I'm hoping to buy a used car from a SIMI dealer in Dublin in the next few months. Budget about 10.5k to 11k max.

What's the norm in terms of the advertised price and the price we settle on?

    Should I offer 5% less? 10% less?

How negotiable are the advertised prices?

I won't be doing any trade in...

    thanks

Try and get as best price as possible nobody can tell you it will be 5 or 10%

Look up a few places, find a car similar and see who will do best deal.

Cheapest car isn’t always the best value too.

I found main dealers aren't usually open to much by way of discount but I guess it depends. Always best to go to two and see what they can do for you. If you have a straight deal you should be able to get something.

There is no set % you can go down.
The easiest way is to look around for a car you like, then see if you can find as good a car somewhere else.

You can try things like asking for some free services/washes/other things that the dealer doesn't think would be giving away money but giving away service instead.

I'd normally go down the line of:

Your car is advertised at 22k, I can get a equivalent car/miles/spec for 19k in N.Ireland dealer. I want to do business with you but I need you to work with me on price.

If the garage turns around and tells you to go buy the car at 19k and wont budge a penny (I've had this attitude), then the garage at 22k you are buying from are openly wanting to rob you off and I would cast doubt over the integrity of their aftersales/warranty etc.

I would expect the garage to say I can sell the car for 20k if they have any brain cell and good at negotiating. That is 1k dearer than your 19k but you benefit from buying closer to home and from someone you know.

Your lever to negotiating is 'the car that is your next best alternative'

No point going in saying I want to pay 15k when there is nowhere in Ireland or England you can buy the car reasonably for 15k

Remember your Irish dealer will charge you 3k more than an N.Irish dealer but certainly wont give you 3k more for your tradein.
