Not looking for medical advise, just a general query

Is a saltwater mouthrinse good for helping with existing gum disease

Not really, there is no substitute for thorough mechanical cleaning of your teeth/gums. Brush, interdental brush, floss.......

Is it worthwhile addition to the above or is it something dentists even recommend at all?

I recommend it sometimes instead of certain mouthwashes, for mild gingivitis or post scaling if I get a bit of bleeding, mild trauma like an ulcer . Not really for active periodontitis but bacteria doesn’t really like the alkaline environment it creates. I don’t recommend it as a long term adjunct but it’s helpful for certain people while they are working to improve inflammation in their mouth. It wouldn’t come close to brushing/interdental cleaning in terms of effectiveness.
