Is this a sensible thing to do or are you better off to sell one in a private sale?

One car is no longer required and more than 10 years old so qualifies for scrappage.

    Better off selling usually.
Depends on how much work you want to put in.

Put them up on donedeal etc for a month, if no-one bites check if a dealer will take them as trade in.

One is a 2008 Micra with 60k on it, would be a perfect first car but then it would get €3k scrappage. Would get half that on Donedeal

What's the scrappage scheme you refer to it qualifying for?

OK, I just had a look at that. Nissan charge 8.9% on all vehicles if you avail of the scrappage. In the example they give this is 4,400 euro in interest charges on a juke. So they're not giving you a penny for your micra in reality. Like most things in car sales these days, it's smoke and mirrors and marketing nonsense.

Except you don’t have to take their finance to get the scrappage.

So your bank or credit union can give you an interest-free loan instead.

When the value of the other car (161 Qashqai) is added, the idea is to pay the remainder in cash if possible. I think thats going to be approx €12k but if its much more then would have to rethink the cash. purchase
