    1. There is a public main running through a house which I have purchased. Am I permitted to extend my property?

    Sewer and drainage connections fall under the remit of the individual landowner and may be moved in line with building regulations. However, the exception to this rule is if there is a public main running through the property under the remit of Irish Water.

    You should have a Way Leave Agreement and the relevant documentation should have been received along with the deed of the property. Queries in relation to the diversions of public mains on private property can be directed to diversions@water.ie and our Diversions Team will be able to assist you further.

    2. I’ve noticed a strong taste and smell of Chlorine from my water supply recently. Why is this? How can I rectify this?

    Chlorine plays an important role in protecting public health by killing harmful bacteria in our drinking water. This is a necessary disinfectant used worldwide across the water industry to help maintain a safe drinking water supply and it is not harmful to your health.

    Operational changes during the treatment process may result in a slight increase in Chlorine levels and this may result in a change of the taste and smell of the water.

    If the smell or taste of Chlorine is stronger than normal, you should fill a jug with tap water, cover it and store in the fridge, preferably over night. This should reduce the smell and/or taste of Chlorine.

    3. I’m currently experiencing low pressure to my cold kitchen tap. Can you look into this?

    Please send a PM with the following details and we can investigate:
    - Name;
    - Address;
    - Contact number;
    - When you first noticed this; and
    - If your neighbours are also affected by this.

    In order to turn off your supply from the public mains to your property, you can switch your supply off using the outside stop valve located in your meter box, when safe to do so. Once the works are complete you can turn back on your supply from the same location.

    4. Can I temporarily disconnect the water supply to my property?

    In order to turn off your supply from the public mains to your property, you can switch your supply off using the outside stop valve located in your meter box, when safe to do so. Once the works are complete you can turn back on your supply from the same location.

    5. I have received a huge bill for my commercial property and I would like to discuss the amount. Can you assist?
