The had some “documentary” about Amazon in the other night that had to be the worst thing I’ve ever seen on television.

Big time, a paid ad for the company with a horrible reputation on how they treat their workers

    Ah, gogglebox is good.

And 7pm news is deadly. They're so biased its unreal. Their Brexit coverage was like a sitcom some of the time. They love making a show of right wingers .

Two hours of it back to back on earlier. Something terribly unsexy about it.

OFcom directives had a bad effect on Channel 4 over the years, drove the best people and their innovative ideas away.

I don't worry about it. There have always been exhibition is ta and they've always done their thing. Now there are TV shows for them so you see them too where in the past you wouldn't have seen them.

No need for pearl clutching and faux outrage because the great news is: if you don't like it, you don't have to watch it.

You’d have liked this then because it was basically an hour of slander of the company. Seemed to not know if it was aimed at adults or kids either. All they were missing were some dramatisations of the bosses with capes a and curly moustaches doing evil laughs.

C4 has Gone downhill massively over the last few years. Their news service has lost all credibility, their ability to make absolutely top notch comedy has withered up and even their investigative programmes seem to lack imagination.

Channel 4 used be about challenging the status quo and the establishment, then they became it.

I was challenged in this assessment once by someone who likes it, asking how I could be sure I wouldn't be entertained by it if I hadn't watched it. My answer was that (a) the format told me all I needed to know and (b) while I might indeed be entertained by it, I didn't want to be entertained by it, because there are so many other things I'd rather be entertained by.

I don't claim to know that much about C4 back in the day. But I do know their core target audience is the 16-34 age bracket. Is there any chance that when you thought it was better was also the time when you were 16-34? And now that you've moved towards the top of that bracket or maybe out of that bracket entirely, that you think the standard has gone down?

So for example the first few posts in this thread were worrying about c4 showing Naked Attraction which where contestants stand naked being a screen and are revealed from the bottom up. Starting with their genitals, then to the neck then their face. They discuss the contestants genitals, grooming and figures and try to see what they can discern about them from just their naked body. Some posters said it was a sign of moral decline and others said they have stopped making shows that push the boundaries.

You can say what you like about the concept of the show but it is pushing a boundary. You don't find much discussion like that on BBC4. There are other shows with a similar the like The Sex Clinic and Embarrassing Bodies but they're also c4 shows.

BBC 3 is another one that aims at the 16-34s. I wouldn't be surprised if you're not a big fan of their content either.

Have you considered BBC4? They specifically target the 35s and over. Lots of really interesting documentaries and some of the comedy they show is really good but slower paced - Detectorists is a good example of a slower paced comedy aimed at an older audience.

It was pretty hilarious watching their live coverage of the last UK election as it showed the bubble they are in, the results weren't even particularly different to a lot of the polling and this is after the shock of Brexit passing, but I suppose the participants were just unaware the UK isn't just central London.

Really gone to hell as a channel and I don't think its because I got older as the bollocks they show seems to be pretty different to the bollocks thats popular with younger people of Youtube and Netflix

That was High Comedy and I think they removed it from youtube because it was just amazingly how out of touch their luvvies are with the British Public.

Of course the stuff they produce is different to YouTube and netflix. They're different platforms. But absolutely it's partially about you getting older. They don't make the shows specifically for you any more.

I wonder if you think the same about fashion and clothes. We're they better back when they were made specifically for you too?

True I suppose, I just don't think the channel 4 stuff is actually aimed at youth as such more 20's and urban 30 something's e.g more the people that lap up Fleabag (and yes know that's BBC) than the people who watch YouTubers

Yeah their main target demographic is 16-34s.

I liked Fleabag and Catastrophe and that type of humour. I don't have any interest in the stuff aimed at exhibitionists like Naked Attraction. But each to their own.

It's too hard to judge whether the quality has changed since the people judging have probably moved out of their target demographic.

Same as myself! Mentioned a show I saw to some of my younger colleagues and they didn't know there even was a BBC4. They though I meant the radio station.

When I was a teenager Channel 4 was the equivalent of porn on a Saturday night. Euro Trash, an erotic thriller (that would carry a 15 certificate now) and god knows what else. A mate of mine used to just set his vcr to record 3 hours of content without checking what was on, "just in case" there was some titivating content. People don't know how lucky they are nowadays!

Ah yes, you'd happen on C4 showing a program with a man and woman getting hot and heavy and your eye would flick to where the triangle would show to see how good it might get...

I think the dreadful "Carnal Knowledge" was whelped C4? As far as I know that was Graham Norton's first TV job. It was like an X-rated Mr and Mrs.

I watch their 7pm news at times - generally find it good - certainly during Brexit discussions I thought they were excellent.

Also, Grand Designs - is that Channel 4 or More4 /E4 - a good programme.

I would say its as good or as bad as VM1 /2/3..........

Go to all4 app and watch some of the Walter Presents series. It’s been a lifesaver in my house.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,635 ✭✭✭dublinman1990

I do use Channel 4 quite often in my house.

I rarely use All4 but I heard it is getting popular again among the 16-34 age group in the UK with 80% of all within that age group were registered to it from mid to late March. This is from official figures since their lockdown for "you know who" came into place in the UK. I heard that All4 got all nine seasons of Scrubs back on it recently which could spike up their usage again. I am not saying in anyway that would be a certainty during these times btw.

I am currently watching Batwoman & The Big Bang Theory on E4 at the moment. Batwoman is getting better all the time IMO.

I had watched the recent Dispatches special about the traveller crime in the UK as well.

I had watched the F1 coverage on Channel 4 all the time because I can't afford to watch the Sky F1 channel. I will come back to it when it returns to normal.

I watch a few movies on it the odd time as well.

Me watching Channel 4 or any of the sister channels won't die down in my house anytime soon.

Channel 4 news and Channel 5 new is done by ITV. Which says a lot about how three networks filter or dumb it down for broadcasting.

For UK news look at Channel 4 news, Newsnight. I'd even look at HIGNFY or even Mock the Week. The tories have the BBC under control thanks to cutting income. Getting rid of the OAP licence freebies was a neat trick , BBC are damned what ever they do.

Channel 4's charter means they MUST do stuff for minorities. They can't do shows that are too popular. They had to fight to keep Brookside after it became too popular and exceeded the viewership threshold.

Friday Night Diner is still good.
