men and compliments

Why are men so seldom paid compliments compared to women? Neither men nor women like to pay the male gender compliments. For women, they can't make one without it coming across as flirting and for guys, they don't want to come across as gay.

Is it gay to say as a man that another man is "handsome/cute"? My friends seem to think so

I hate it if a man tells me I'm good looking

Or if a woman does too

I often get told that I’m “looking well” by both men and women. I simply say “thank you” and tell them I’ve been looking after myself.

If they, also, look well I will say “as are you”. At this stage it is, generally, only some of the women who will get this reply.

men get respect or compliments based on their actions

A belief in gender identity involves a level of faith as there is nothing tangible to prove its existence which, as something divorced from the physical body, is similar to the idea of a soul. - Colette Colfer

You do realise that they don’t mean it and they simply couldn’t think of anything else to say and they do a mental ‘eye roll’ when you reply. Next time you should respond ‘yeah whatever’ you can add in ‘bitch’ to the end of that if you wish and it works for both men and bitches women.

Not really. A better looking male will get away with a lot. I had a good looking male boss, who got away with murder because of his looks. He wasn’t the most talented, bit of a spoofer.

I get compliments because I am sound and gorgeous. A fine specimen of a man.

If you dont get compliments mr_f well, you'll just have to ask your mammy for one.

I'd only ever compliment my male friends if the were recovering from illness/stress/grief etc. I just basically to give them a lift, when you think they need it. I would love to see a bloke come along and give the lads I work with a few compliments, ( the piss take would be brilliant)
There are not many women who can take compliments these day, I find if you pass a compliment to a woman (she thinks your trying to get into my knickers, and she's probably right)

It's not an Irish thing to give compliments. It's an Irish thing to pull someone down or take the piss out of them.

I'll give you a compliment Mr F. Your have a superb memory. You mentioned (on another thread) an article that you remembered from 2010/11, that discussed the weather here and in the UK. That's fantastic recall for a man in his early 20's. Seriously. And you were only after arriving from Africa then too. Incredible.

And your turn of phrase is what I would expect from a much older man, which suggests that you are mature beyond your tender years. Your parents should be proud.

everything has counter examples but directionally my point is correct

    Who'd he murder ?

I'm pretty handsome myself but a bit dopey.

It is nice to get a compliment, so it is also nice for someone else to receive them.
I was on holidays years ago and this guy who was going out with a friends sister whom he later married said to me “you got lovely eyes”. I said ‘thank you’ and it was nice, it does one good.
Better to have someone saying something nice to you than the opposite.

He didn’t murder anybody. He was just in love with himself and got by with very little talent, because of the confidence that came with his looks.

Men generally don't put nearly as much stock in outward appearance as women do. Male friends aren't interested in your new shirt or nice new shoes. They certainly aren't interested in the intricacies of the short back and sides you got at the barbers. That stuff is usually completely ignored.

Whereas with women, owing to the amount of time and effort they put into their physical appearance when going out, would enjoy/expect a compliment as recognition for that time and effort spent.

Men get compliments on career progression, their new fancy car etc. Women get compliments about physical appearance. May not be PC to say, but that's the way it is.
