Tipper Trailer

    Does anyone have any recommendations for 8-10ft tipper trailers?

    I’m looking at the selection from Ifor Williams, Nugent, James, etc.
    Are Nugent or Willliams worth the extra? Also - any recommendations on a supplier?

    Will be used for mostly light work and the odd load of concrete. I might go new, as I want something in decent condition and don’t need any headaches. Anything decent 2nd hand hasn’t dropped much from RRP.

    Porter trailers are without the best of the trailers. You won’t see many secondhand and usually have to order them. They are based up north. Do you really need a tipper they are a lot heavier and don’t tow as well as a flatbed.

    Thanks - I’ll look into them. Haven’t heard of them.

    I could do without, it’s just I do collect a lot of garden waste from around the house and it would be very handy for dumping it. I have a flat bed at the moment and it’s a pain to empty the trailer, especially with branches, briars, etc all mixed in with the leaves and grass cuttings.

    The weight is a concern, but I’m not too worried about the pulling as I rarely go any long distances.

    Go along to any dealer...they should let you pull one a short distance to get an idea of what they're like to pull. If you're considering new at all, go new. It's very difficult to find a secondhand trailer without some faults, and if you do find a good one, you'll pay near enough new price anyway. I would be inclined to go with an established, factory built trailer. The design and finish is usually better. Dealer back up and parts availability will be better, and you'll have no bother selling or trading it in when the time comes. As well as Ifor, Nugent, and Porter as mentioned above, some other makes worth checking out would be Dale Kane and Tuffmac. But, if you have an Ifor or Nugent dealer near you, you're as well go with either of them.

    Go for one that doesn't have that resin board floor.
    How much is a 10×6 tipper? Probably 5k anyway and that's the best they can put in as a floor - cheapskates!

    5k wouldn’t even get an 8*4. For a 10*6 you would be talking 6.5k minimum.

    It’s hard to tell the exact make up of the floor. Some mention ply, but it seems to be lined with 2mm of aluminum. I’m not sure if this is for strength or just ease of sliding the load out .

    Good point though, I’ll dig into this a little more.

    Probably to keep the weight down using the resin floor.
    6.5k minimum! Get a good lock and chain etc, they tend to go walkies a lot!
    I'd even get a gsm tracker and bung it in somewhere. These 2 eventually got caught by robbing a quad with a e10 eBay tracker in it.

    Just to close this out - I’ve had a look at Ifor Williams, Nugent and Brian James.

    I still need to track down detail on Porter and Tuffmac.

    But so far, much of a muchness between the costs of each. For an 8x5 - your looking at 4.5-5.5k inc VAT.

    I seriously looking at the Brian James, but not sure if the residuals will be there if I ever did sell it on.

    However - they are doing 30% off options, so can pick up a ramp kit and mesh sides for about €800.

    Likely to be other vendor deals coming on stream over the coming weeks apparently.

    Any feedback on Brian James or the newer Ifor models would be appreciated.

    It’s a bit of a misconception that porter are heavier, when I checked the weights on cattle trailers the porter actually weighed in 20kg lighter than the nugent. I’ve a 12 by 6 nugent flatbed only a couple of years old and I intend changing it to a porter at some time.

    I tried Porter - firstly there is at least a 3 month wait and they no longer make tippers any more. Everything is made to order. They do look the part though from the limited info I could get.

    Try Dale Kane trailers, good value, many dealers around. Best weight allowance per axle and strongest hardox sides (can strap them and wont bend) They are a brother of the Kane agri / lowloader trailers

    So just to close this out - new trailer arrived today. I went with Ifor Williams in the end.

    Main reason was availability - nearly all others were unavailable and too long of a waiting list. Must say, not a huge difference in them across the market in terms of cost or supposed quality.

    To address a few points:
    Apparently - the Ifor Williams cattle trailers are the ones that seem to be of lower quality than previous models. Their tippers are heavier than ever.
    The Ifor is the only one I came across that doesn't have a timber floor lined with metal. Dale Kane has a 35mm plank floor lines, all others have a resin/ply board floor lined. The Ifor has a ribbed alu floor.
    Mesh sides and ramps will cost you 1500ish extra
    I went with the 8ft, which is one of the smallest across the options. Others have a 9foot and then obviously a 10ft.
    Apparently - Big shortage of new stock coming in due to the virus. Many factories just re-opening with a skeleton crew. One dealer I spoke too said he was advised to hold onto stock and demand would increase the value.
    For Finance - 5K will cost you about 250E per year in interest. E5400 will cost 173/mnth for 3 years.

    The 8ft should be fine for me, but it does look a little small. 10fts are about 500-900 dearer depending on dealer.

    Mostly a landcruiser. However my father plans to use it from time to time and thinks he will be using an e-class Mercedes - with a detachable towbar!!!

    Even with the landcruiser - you would still know it was behind you.

    The lad who delivered it actually had a Audi A4 I think. It was a long drive for a saloon car - 2&1/2+ hours.
