Our recent communications have highlighted the fact that Blacknight are the online experts, home of the cloud, etc. We've been very busy since the crisis began, handling the jump in network traffic, helping companies to get online, setting up remote working technologies like Microsoft 365.

But on a personal level, it's hard. We planned a remote-working test on Friday 13 March but then the schools closed and we never went back to the office. Of course we need to send specialist staff to the data centres from time to time but that's the beauty of the cloud: it's designed for remote access. In fact, limiting physical access is an essential element of our information security system.

Overnight, Blacknight has become a distributed company. It's going well, in fairness, and we know we're lucky to be working. There are even some positive aspects to this different pace of life.

There is also stress, isolation, boredom and cabin fever. We miss the office banter, nights out and community activities. We are relishing contact with our customers - especially on the phone - and we know that many of you appreciate the chat as well.

We started a podcast. It’s not going to save lives. We’ve got nothing to say on that subject, except listen to official sources and reputable news organisations. But as citizens we’ve all been asked to stay apart, to limit the spread of the virus and make it manageable for medical experts to help those who need it.

The rest of us need to stay off the streets and distract ourselves however we can. Some people are caring for kids or the elderly. Some are dancing in their kitchens or singing in the shower. There are Zoom parties and phone calls. There is a sea of memes.

Michele said I could make a podcast if it keeps me out of trouble. So here it is: The Lock-In Podcast. It’s taken a few episodes to settle down, but the basic idea is simple: it’s about how we live now - with the broadest possible definition of ‘we’. I’ve started with friends and family but now I need to burst that bubble. Do you have an experience to share? Leave a comment please - or email conn@blacknight.com. Or listen, subscribe and let me know what you think.
