    Hi All,

Just recently (as in yesterday) inherited the herd number.

    Decided against selling up :):pac::pac::D.

Looking to get into GLAS. It looks like free money.

    Some questions.

    1) Is it worth the hassle/red tape?
    2) Is it currently open for application or when will it be next open?
3)If you apply to GLAS is it just the applicable fields you get payment on or is it "all in" as some part is elligible? (leads on to next question)

    4) Can you have different parts under the remit of different parts of GLAS? e.g. we would have some fields with water ways flowing on the boundary and other fields in a different location would be part od a special area of constraint.
    5) How is the payment calculated?

    6) What do the application cost on average for the agri advisor?

    Thanks all!

Good luck with farming life anyway, might change your mind about selling up soon enough :-D

To try answer some of your questions:

1: Any payment/scheme is worth the money if you stick with it. Might have to spend a bit in the 1st year to make in subsequent ones though.

2: GLAS is closed for applications at the moment and there probably won't be a new agri-environmental scheme until there is an agreement on CAP

3: In GLAS you are only paid on what your GLAS plan has laid out at the start. Different tiers of applications for getting accepted, SACs etc are classed as Tier 1 and so would give you a better chance of acceptance than somebody with Tier 2 only application

4: GLAS payment is calculated off your initial plan and it is up to the planner to go through with you all the different areas of the farm and different scheme actions that would be available to you.

5: As above, different action have different values. Bird box is €15/year, laying hedges is €1.50/m/year I think. All would have a maximum and minimum amount that can be claimed for over the lifetime of the scheme. Maximum of 15 bird boxes, maximum amount of metres of hedge laying etc. Think the max payment per year is €5000 of close enough.

6: Cant remember for certain but something tells me around €1000 for planner. Cant remember if that included the nutrient management plan or not. The soil sampling I know was extra alright

Thanks for the detailed reply. Agree that these schemes are the easy money.

Is there any point engaging with the agri advisor now? Is it likely the details of the scheme or even what schemes there are will have changed when it reopens?

How come the person you inherited from hadn't applied for Glas back in the early days?

Father wasn’t interested in the schemes. Too much hassle.

No there is no point in engaging until the ag advisor knows the specs of any new scheme.

I think you have sucklers? Might be worth while ringing teagasc to see if any of the beef schemes are open to new entrants. TBH it's the only money that's in beef farming at present. Had your old lad applied for bps, 15th May is the deadline for that.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Yeah 17 suckler cows this year.

Not yet applied for BPS. We held off of the application while the transfer went through. Just waiting on my access code for agonline...hopefully entitlements transfered as expected.....

We are in Beef data but that is ending this year.

In Beam also.....but they will look for the money back as I don’t think we will have reduced the required N amount...

Also gonna going Beep-s. That’s a nice handy one in fairness.

I'd imagine that the BDGP scheme will continue, whether it'll be worth doing is another thing.

The 5% reduction period for the BEAM scheme doesn't start until July 1st this year, don't think too many farmers will have any problem reducing numbers by 5%.
