    Hi

im considering buying some land and grazing cattle.im aware farming is probably not a road to riches but im hoping it something i could give it a go all the same

Im trying to find out how much the basic payment is under CAP and conditions but im finding there so much information that i dont understand the basics of requirements and how much is paid?

I understand it based on entitlements and acres used for farming but what are entitlements? is it similar to quota for fishing and i need to buy them from an existing farmer?

The land you buy or rent will probably have some entitlements coming with it.

The entitlements are rights to claim a certain sum every year for farming the land and keeping it in good agricultural and environmental condition. Basically, not to wreck the land over winter by keeping too many animals on it and causing the grass to be wrecked on it.

Every hectare or part of a hectare can claim an entitlement if you have them. If you don't have entitlements, they can be bought or leased every year around this time of year from auctioneers or ads in the Agricultural papers. The entitlements come in different values according to what amount can be claimed on them, eg, a 250euro entitlement entitlement means you can claim for 250euro every year as long as you have a hectare being farmed to claim it on.

Before you go out buying entitlements, be aware that there is no guarantee that they will continue to exist beyond any given round of CAP.
