DPF won't stop black smoke ,quite normal under heavy load, never worry about the stuff you can see, Greta has you all looking for things that aren't there

Only thing Gardai would be interested in is it road legal as such as tax, insurance and NCT

My car doesn't have a dpf by design and doesn't pump out clouds of smoke. There is obviously a mechanical issue with that car.

Yeah there's definitely something wrong with it .But dpf was probably removed and never fix the problem that blocked the filter

Not just dpf and still back then many weren't fitted with....
Egr could be clogged or platted off.

    Are they driving it hard?

I'd suggest if you are behind turn air inside your vehicle the recirculation before you start drawing in this smoke....

filter blocks through failure of car to reach proper running temp to regenerate , short runs, with DPF removed there won't be any clogging so possibly no fault.

To be fair, I dont see the point in this unless you're going to go full Greta Thunberg.

What's one car's worth of a difference to you at this rate?

Confront the owner, might be good, you'll know you got the message to the end user. He'll know and you'll know he'll know.

    Gards aren't going to care.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 702 ✭✭✭Fuascailteoir

Might not be the dpf at all. More likely to be an issue with injectors or intercooler pipe. Something that would need to be sorted before next nct anyway

Beautiful reply to the busy body.

I would say the X5 has been badly remapped maybe.

Defo poor remap with generic map from ebay or so.. mine bmw has dpf removed with custom remap and pass its smoke test on nct with lower numbers than b4.

I always keep back when I come across cars like this. Is their anything stopping you from holding back and just letting them get ahead?

I was near a BMW of this model in north Clare with the same issue, a smokescreen left behind. Is there some issue with this model?

It's likely the people who own it, just dont give a toss. I've seen this kinda thing from a wide range of cars.

You're just adding to the Nox issue which is why a dpf was fitted.

    These particles are killing people.

Taking it out and remaps isn't the way....

I am holding back but if can afford the fairly expensive x5 newer shape he can maintain it better instead of driving the sh*t out of it coming to a stop sign and then take off like a rally driver is a joke poisoning the cars behind him .

There are any number of faults that could cause a vehicle with a healthy DPF to smoke excessively. I had a Ford do exactly the same with a faulty airflow meter cause this. It was misreading the airflow at double it's true rate, and in an attempt to compensate, was opening the EGR valve excessively which in turn caused the smoke. Shortly after it was repaired, the car passed its NCT test with a miniscule smoke reading.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,686 ✭✭✭User1998

I don’t think removing a DPF causes any additional black smoke. Getting a ‘smokey remap’ adds more fuel to the mix and the excess fuel is just burned off or something and it gives you lots of black smoke. Probably not the case here tho as its more common in lowered b5 passats being driven by young fellas

yeah it was rolling coal like that. would definitely agree that removing dpf shouldn't have cause that amount of smoke .must be a bad remap I say or something

I bought a car a few years ago privatly and after a day I glanced in the rear view mirror only to see smoke coming out under exeleration.... I shyte myself.... and it was pretty bad ...

After a couple of sleepless nights it turned out it was just a injector that needed ajusting and it was fixed very cheap ....

Will I learn from this in future.... dont bet ur life on it....
