This came up in a wattsapp group today, if this year goes ahead in USA and the captains get 12 picks.

    What would your 12 be??

    Mine would be

    Rory
    Rahm
    Rose
    Hovland
    Pieters
    Fleetwood
    Poulter
    Casey
    Garcia
    Stenson
    Hatton
    Lowry

Thomas Pieters - 73rd in the world and the 24th top ranked European in the world rankings. There would be a lot of people who would feel quite rightly aggrieved to see him there ahead of them

True, im weighting some picks based on it being in the USA and i think he fits it.

Surely gmac as a US based player and having recent good form over there would be a better pick in that case ?

    http://www.owgr.com/en/Ranking/PlayerProfile.aspx?playerID=13944

90% of pieters events in the last 2 years have been on the european tour

I would sub out pieters for Wiesberger

Molinari hard to leave out but I like Hovland being given a go.

I think Garcia not playing well, looks like he’s going through the motions since the masters win, it’s away from home with the US crowd, emotionally for him would be a recipe for disaster. I know he has a fabulous record but I can’t see it continuing this year.

Looking down the world rankings I’d go with

    McIlroy
    Rahm
    Fleetwood
    Rose
    Lowry
    Hatton
    Casey
    Fitzpatrick
    Wiesberger
    Molinari
    Stenson
    Cabrera Bello

I think those last 3 would cope well with being away from home with the crowd there, even if there are others in better form at the moment,

Robert McIntyre would be my pick

Zero USA experience would be a big problem. But tbh if things were normal he would likely qualify himself!

    What about your best mate?

    Lee Westwood

    Matthew Fitzpatrick

    1 McIlroy
    2 Rahm
    3 Fleetwood
    4 Molinari
    5 Rose
    6 Stenson
    7 Molinari
    8 Poulter
    9 Lowry
    10 Hatton
    11 Knox
    12 Laird
Last 2 are a bit left field but play primarily on PGA Tour and I think they both took up European Tour Membership to try make team...Anyway not every agrees on everything and it's just a bit of fun.. Imagine Paddy's problems if he had to just pick the team and not rely on rankings

    I’d go with:
    1. McIlroy
    2. Rahm
    3. Fleetwood
    4. Rose
    5. Stenson
    6. Casey
    7. Molinari
    8. Garcia
    9. Lowry
    10. Poulter
    11. Hatton
    12. Hovland

Maybe GMac for Garcia if he’s not playing well.

Yeah yours is probably closer to actual team than mine with Hovland and Casey..I left Casey out coz he had a baby out of the bathwater moment a few years back and didn't commit to your and only left Hovland out due to lack of Pro Experience..both great players though

Victor Perez would have to be considered

Good shout. If there were some tournaments before the team is picked at he won one, he could easily get a pick.

Casey did well in 2018 in France, getting a half against Koepka when things were going against Europe. He plays all the time in the States and would be a good partner for someone like Hatton.

Disappointing lack of love for Fitzpatrick.

9th this year in Bay Hill and 2nd last year. Also 4th in the FedEx.

I think he's almost a cert for the team tbh.

This is all about your(everyone's) personal choice given the situation atm, so everyone will think someone else should be in the team just show your hand with your 12 picks and by the end of the forum there will probably be about 8/9 players that nearly everyone agrees on.

Well Stricker has now been given 6 picks if the Ryder cup does go ahead.

Not a clue how they are going to figure out the european team really. Just a mess completely. Harrington is probably going to get 6 picks as well.

Not like there's going to be any decent sample sized form to pick players on either, leaving things far more open to bias than usual.

Can't believe they haven't postponed indefinitely. The logistics of it are pretty bad.

Will be very tough for Harrington/Europe if it does go ahead as the European Tour restarts on July 23rd, 6 weeks after the PGA tour.

European players not playing in the US will have very little time to find form before the team is picked. I think they need to give Harrington more picks.

Insurance seems from all the rumours to be the main issue. Main reason the Open was cancelled is that they actually have pandemic insurance apparently

    Decision being made this week.

Looking more and more likely to go ahead and the success of Charles Schwab will only push it more towards playing.

Awful for Wisconsin if it does. Although Postponing for a year does not guarantee fans being there. You'd have to hope it would be very likely. Imagine Adare 2026 with no fans. They just show up and play and leave. Would be dreadful.

Some economic cost to the host town for it not to be played even if the commercial cost is all in TV/Sponsors/Gambling

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,337 ✭✭✭Wombatman

Poor showing this week from Euro players in US. Some hopefuls well off the cut line and only one in the top ten, Rose.

    Hopefuls cut include:
    Perez +5
    Lowry +4
    Willett +3

First week back after Covid so might not mean much from a form perspective.

PGA has confirmed that the Ryder Cup has been postponed until 2021.

I think that’s the right decision.

Can you link that? Can't see it confirmed other than 'it will be announced next week'

Looks like Even Murray (Sky commenter) has broken the news in his column for the guardian. Haven’t seen any other US website or twitter handle say anything.

PGA announced the PGA will go ahead but without fans alright.

Had the Ryder cup got the go ahead this September then I really feared of big defeat for Europe. Some of America's big players were playing great again, and while it was good see Poults and Justin Rose playing much better golf again, ominously from Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Bryson de Chambeau, Webb Simpson and even Daniel Berger and of course not forgetting Tiger, this might have been a task too many for Paddy and the European team.

It appears that the rescheduled Irish Open will take its place on the golfing calendar from September 24th, covid 19 permitting of course with Mount Juliet set to host the tournament as was planned when the championship was postponed earlier in the year due to the coronavirus.

It looks like the 2026 Ryder cup, due to be held at Adare manor, will be pushed to 2027.

Cant see why they dont do a genuine postpone, rather than a half cancellation which is what this is. And still have one in 2022 as well as 2021. Like they should have had 2003. That would leave the planned ones in the same years, and we wouldnt be losing out on another half one.

The cancellation actually works out for the best

It will mean there will be no clash with the Olympics after next year leading to a better schedule for both events
