Gnat issue

Every year I have a problem with what I think are some form of gnats in my back garden. Every evening around when the sun is going down, my back garden is covered with them. It's north facing (if that makes a difference).

There is an old pond but I had it covered with tarmac just after I moved in 5 years ago. I've two trees in the back corner, a cherry blossom and a pine tree. They seem to gather more on that side and if I had a branch on that tree, hundreds will fly about.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to get rid of them and solve the issue?
