Just wondering I bought a car 2 weeks ago the owner had forgotten log book so I sent him my address and he was to send it on just haven’t received yet and not sure if he even had it. Anyway I’m wondering is there any way I can tax it or get new logbook to tax it as don’t want guards in my case?

    Thanks.

I think you might have bigger issues than taxing it, no one forgets the log book when selling a legitimate car.

It’s quite unwise to buy something without any paperwork but it’s done now.

First port of call would be the seller.

If you are not named as the owner on the Vehicle Registration Certificate (if the seller didn't send off the VRC for example) and there is no contact with the seller/registered owner, there is a process in place to obtain a new VRC

The new owner must submit the Statutory Declaration Form to the Department of Transport, Shannon, Co. Clare.

The Declaration includes garage certified details and the sworn date of purchase can be used as the date from which the tax is to be charged,

    no Garda stamp is required.
    No Rf134 is required.

Statutory Declarations can be witnessed by a commissioner for Oaths, Notary Public/Practising Solicitor or Peace Commissioner.

I'm guessing that the seller didn't actually have the logbook and gave you a bs story about sending it off and now leaving it in your hands to sort? Did you buy it from the seller's property or did you meet them somewhere? If the latter then your probably wasting your time chasing them. If the seller is the owner then you could chase them to request a replacement logbook and then fill your details in to get it changed over.

every banger ive ever sold i would still get person to sign slip and fill out details, plus would go as far to ask for license to take pic and put time on sale, way i see it, most people buy for couple hundred so you never know the intention, so at least getting few details down, you wont be hammered later if someone decides to fly past some toll's or other crap, until transfer is done. and even when buying cheap that would be total deal breaker as no book means prob some bigger issues, aside one losing it, cant imagine anyone responsible selling without one being decent.

Plenty of wheeler dealer types with burner phones and operating from supermarket car parks that trade cars around without the logbooks. Getting the car re-registered becomes the new owners problem then.

Did you arrange for log book to be sent to you?
Seller is supposed to send log book to Shannon.

You can try ringing Shannon and see if car have changed owners.

You can check change of ownership online on motortax.ie

    Ring the seller and ask.

I don't think the motortax office are posting anything at the minute,

    Put the reg in here,

    https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/changeOwnership.do

And it will tell you if they have done there part.

If it says "No change of ownership in the last 3 months", then they haven't posted it.
