looking for a bit of advice. I've been researching my family tree on/off over the past year. I've been using all of the free resources mentioned in the Sticky thread here, and have found a lot of useful information from birth, marriage and death certs. For my family tree I'm using MyHeritage (free version).

But now I seem to have come to a stumbling block and can't find any more information beyond my great-great-great grandfather on both my father and mother's side of the family. I only have his name and no other information.

What would you recommend I should do now? Would i need to look at subscribing on MyHeritage or other sites in order to be able to gather more information? i don't mind subscribing but don't want to waste any money, and from looking around it seems a lot of sites out there want some sort of payment.

Depending on the time frame and your g-g-g-grandparents circumstances you may or may not be able to go any further.

Can you provide some more information on where your stuck - the when, where, who and what of the individuals concerned?

    Yes, more info please.

In terms of subscription, it depends on what they have that may be relevant, but I would put My Heritage at the very bottom of usefulness of Irish records. They don't have anything unique and unless you're using their DNA resources (which are good), I'd be going with probably Rootsireland or FindmyPast first/second, then Ancestry, then the Irishnewsarchive.

Thanks guys. I didn't want to post too much info online. On my mother's side there is a g-g-g grandfather called Charles Rodgers...I think he was a teacher and born around 1807 in Donegal(?) or Fermanagh. He had a son called John Rodgers b. 1844 in Pettigo and married Mary Pratt. I just can't find any more info on Charles and whether he was actually a teacher.

Have you been into the National Archives to look at their records of teachers?

Second Report of the Commissioners of Instruction in Ireland 1835 has the names of school teachers [but I haven't managed to find a way to search in the document] - it's divided into archdioceses

THere's a hedge school run by G Rogers in Taughboyne Co Donegal on this page http://www.dippam.ac.uk/eppi/documents/10934/page/248122
Mary Ann Rogers Rutland Day school Templecrone http://www.dippam.ac.uk/eppi/documents/10934/page/248123

Yes, the main National Archives catalogue is very confusing.

But going in there and having a word with the duty archivist and getting their assistance when you can will be much more beneficial.

You can search the Second Report of the Commissioners of Instruction in Ireland 1835 on Google Books:

    https://books.google.ie/books?id=6SU4AQAAMAAJ&pg=RA2-PA86&lpg=RA2-PA86&dq=2nd+report+of+the+commissioners+1835+hedge+school&source=bl&ots=PFd8-TCDlF&sig=ACfU3U228QvRffs3Pmfmgcs9nPUWvaT1fg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi44prF0uPoAhUEZMAKHcsZCh4Q6AEwB3oECAsQOw#v=onepage&q=Taughboyne%20&f=false

Are there any records for Hedge Schools after 1835 out of curiosity. A relative claimed that one of my ancestor's had a hedge school in the townland where he lived but I don't see the surname in the parish in 1835. He might be incorrect about that but I would be interested if there were other sources.
