AA membership renewal quote

I've been with AA for years (both insurance and breakdown cover). Last year, my AA Platinum Membership cover including Roadside Rescue & Homestart was €90 (the initial quote was €135).

This year, the initial quote was €184. The best price I could negotiate was €108. They wouldn't budge beyond that. That's still 18% more than I paid last year (despite not needing their breakdown service in the past 12 months). I asked them to justify the increase, but they wouldn't.

What's other peoples' experience with AA Membership costs?

It goes up every year for me too. I normally show them the new customer price and it gets them to drop close to it. In the past when they refused to drop it I cancelled and resigned up as a new customer at the lower price.

How often have you actually used it? Would the standard breakdown you get with your car insurance be enough?

Unlike insurance company breakdown service, if i breakdown anywhere in Ireland will the AA tow me to nearest garage or tow me home?,if not don't see the point paying extra for AA.

Its a personal preference but given the age of my car I feel its worth the premium over your standard Insurance offerings. AA Platinum will have the car towed anywhere in Ireland, and also covers you on your journey if you are a passenger in another car. In a lot of cases the insurance ones will be fine for most people.

Most insurance companies ( my own Liberty) with fully comprehensive give the same as the AA

They don't, if your in live in Wexford and you break down in Dublin you will not be coming back with your car as i found out with Aviva,i just looked on line with a AA quote you will be towed back home.

Read the fine print in the terms and conditions. I experienced this previously. They lowered the initial quote to the cheaper cover option(without informing me, but it was my mistake for not reading through the terms and sorting it within the 14day cooling off period) and towing was only within a 30km radius.
Option to get towed home or to garage of choice if you're on platinum cover ie the most expensive.
Almost all insurers have some sort of breakdown cover included these days so I don't see the point

I used to be a member of the AA, but these days most policies include breakdown cover.
In fact AA insurance is somewhat surprisingly in that they didn't include breakdown insurance. Might've changed now, but they were never competitive so I've written them off years ago.

How often do you break down miles from home and need to use the AA?

It cost over €100 a year, if you put that in a savings account. After 2 years of no AA cover you'd get your car towed anywhere in Ireland after 3 years you'll have the price of a minor repair.

AA will do their best to get you running at the side of the road.

Wife and I have been members for a good few years now, their pricing model is annoying though, hate having to ring up to get a better rate. Much better service than insurance breakdown cover in my opinion.

Yes we are always the same too, have to contact them every year to keep them on their toes....

My AA cover was up for renewal.... so its platinum membership, with rescue plus and one other driver. The renewal was €259.00, after contacting them twice they dropped it down to €135.00... to be fair i think they are being reasonable with people considering the current situation.... think i paid €189 last year..

Throwing this in here for what it's worth......

If you're renewing with Axa and you don't have breakdown recovery, ring them, tell them you're a member of a credit union and they will throw in recovery for free.

Don't ask me why, I discovered this when I went out to their office in Bray to renew last year. Figured I might do better on the renewal face to face so called out to them. Guy behind the desk asked me if I was a member of a credit union, I said I was and he gave me recovery for free. Never even asked for the name of the CU. They confirmed this on the phone a few weeks ago when I was renewing for 2020.

I recently signed up for AA membership as it was only 90 quid, and there was 80 euro off the insurance premium if you signed up for both. So for the sake of a tenner I thought it was worth it. Worked out better in reality as the fuel saving voucher saves me a few quid on every tank.

Granted that last offer is only worth it if you pass a circle K that’s close to an applegreen. The rest are a rip off for fuel.

'I've been with AA for years'

Part of the issue, you need to shop around every year & change if you get get better elsewhere. But if AA are still the cheapest then stay with them.

There is no loyalty for staying with the same insurer unless it's the cheapest after checking around each year.

Once you do move, the AA should be cheaper the following year to move back to them.

The Insurance business model is about new business not retaining existing.
