Dashcam battery drain advice BMW F10

I have a 2015 520d and just installed the dashcam from my old 3 series in it.

In the 3 series I had it wired via fuse tap to the 12V fuse, and when I turned off the ignition the camera turned off immediately.

In the 5 series, there is a 12V socket in the passenger footwell and it's more convenient to just run the cable around the headliner, down the A piller and under the glove box.

The problem is that the camera seems to stay on when the ignition is off. From reading up on this, it looks like that 12V socket stays on for 15 mins after the car is locked.

If this is the case, would it be harmful for the battery to have the dashcam running for 15 mins after every journey? Especially at the moment when journeys are all quite short.

I've plugged it out for now but is it something to be concerned about?

I have mine plugged into the cigarette lighter outlet in the centre console next to the cup holders but it's not hard wired to any fuses or anything. It keeps recording for a few minutes after the car is locked but has never drained the battery. I didn't even know there was another one in the passenger footwell.

Same setup in an F11. Never had an issue either.

My mondeo stays on for a few minutes after engine off. It wont kill a healthy battery. Just check if it does actually go off after X minutes.

My car goes live when I use central locking fob, so be aware, do not open using fob until after you have checked dashcam by looking through the window.

Yep, it's very handy, I was planning on hardwiring it but it's so tidy and handy with the 12v I'm not bothered.

Hiding the wires is the only neat way of fitting them. Made a big difference when I did it.

Yea there's no way I'd put up with wires visible!

I’ve had all my dash cams wired this way in all my BMW’s over the years the car goes dead after 16 mins or so, then the cam shuts down. Completely normal and ok.

On another note, where’s the 12v in the passenger footwell?
I have my wife’s dash came into the centre console and was planning to get the hard wire kit to plug it into fuse 53 I think it is.

Same setup. Went and checked my car last night after reading this thread and very disappointed to find only a hole in the footwell and no 12v socket.

Can these be retrofitted easily, does anyone know? Far neater than using the centre console 12v.

No 12v in my LCI F10 either.
Buy the fuse piggyback adaptor from Halfords. Much easier and easily removed.

It was an option back when the car was new (to have additional 12V sockets in the car). AFAIK under the passenger side and the boot are the 2 locations.

In my F10 I have the dashcam wired to the fusebox behind the glove box on the 12V fuse powering the 12V output.

The 12V circuit is a switched live so to speak but its fed off a relay which is active 15mins after the car powers down. The relay energises the car "wakes up" if the car is unlocked/locked via the remote key or is the locked boot is attempted to be opened (its an electrically operated mechanism). I also think the alarm in the car also "wakes" it up as I have noticed on the car ferry on bumpy crossings the idrive sometimes detects the connected dash cam and presents an info message on startup.

I have the one in the boot but not under the glovebox.

    Is it an estate?

    Is it an estate?

    It’s a 141 F11, yes. There’s a difference in terms of the power sockets?

AFAIK it was standard in the estate but not in the saloon. £45 option for the additional 12V power sockets from the LCI brochure. standard with "465" is split fold rear seat which is also an option in BMW

Only found about these when fitting a dash cam to my current car. Genius little gadget and makes the job so much handier.

I couldn’t be looking at wires. They’d drive me nuts.
