skimming and screwing ceiling rose

    Hi

I have 2 issues, well not really issue.

I recently got my ceiling reslabbed (over stipple). I want to screw the ceiling rose into the plasterboard, i dont know when the joists are. Can i screw in with plasterboard screws or should i add plugs?

Also, i have been removing dadorail and as it has been there for years is leaving a big mark. I used powder polyfilla and used lots and thought i had it sorted but when the paint dried i could clearly see where the dadrail was.
For the stairs i am think i might use some of the left over skim and use it instead of the polyfilla, would this be better?

Just attach the rose with some plaster, unless its some huge rose you will be fine.
BTW, if it is big, Im assuming you have a big light fitting planned, so you will need to find the joists/blocking anyway.

How many coats of paint did you use?
    Did you prime?

For a horizontal line like that you are probably going to have to paint the full room, the original paint will have faded anyway.

its just a standard rose, nothing fancy.

I filled and primed and painted the walls with 3 coats in total. The house is 30 years old and i only recently bought it so its probably there from day 1.

Did the old dado area also get 3 coats and at the same time?
Even if they did, you are still comparing 3 coats on new plaster to 3 coats on old paint, but it sounds like the new plaster is flashing through the new paint...can you share a pic?
Can you see the actual dado mark or is it the area where you plastered and feathered?

For a regular rose I would (and have!) just glued it to the ceiling, if you have plaster use that, otherwise you can use anything (no more nails, etc)

I’ve had the same recently. I sanded back the joins as best I could but it’s still noticeable. The right paint colour will help - darker probably better but I don’t think you will get rid of it without skimming it.

Maybe the technique they use for skimming plasterboard joints might work. There are loads of YouTube vids on that

I dont know, there is a few different colours so it has been painted a few times. I only move into the house and removed the dadorail so there is about a mm or 2 of old paint thickness.

This wall wasnt plastered, it was an existing one. The plasterer for the ceiling didnt use all the skim so i am wondering can will i use some of the skim and see if i have more success in hiding the dadorail imprint.

When you say ceiling rose, do you mean the light fitting or a decorative plaster ceiling rose?
I wouldn't be glueing a light fitting to the ceiling! If you've slabbed over existing stipple, then you have over an inch of plasterboard to fix into. A normal rawlplug would probably work fine, or you could use some of the ones made especially for plasterboard.

For your dadorail issue, i find Gyproc Easifill to be the best filler for covering up patches and blending different layers of plaster. I think the smallest bag it comes in is 10kg, but worth buying one if you have lots of bits to do. You can overfill and then sand it back real easy. The skim left over from the plasterer will be much harder to use.

Do you mind if I ask how much you paid the plasterer and what the job involved exactly? Looking to get something similar done. PM if you like & also if you'd recommend him? Thanks
