Not sure if this is a windows problem or android device problem but any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have transferred photos from my Samsung Galaxy J4+ to my PC which is running Windows 10. The files now on my computer are jpg format, but they won't open. Other files in this format open.

The only difference I see is that the file size is tiny in some cases 28 bytes

They likely were't transferred over correctly.

What happens when you connect the phone to the PC and open the files directly from the phone without first transferring them over? Do they open?

Can you install Google photos on the galaxy and back up to that ? That way you'll be able to access the images in the cloud on any new device.

Sorry only getting back to this now. Those files are gone now because I deleted them after transfer and my backup to Google photos was off.

I have connected the phone now. I actually found other photos on the phone that I can see on my phone but when I browse to them on the PC and open them directly they don't open. Small file size also 100kb

    Most likely a user problem.

Which mode are you putting your phone in when you transfer them? Are the images you're trying to open/view the actual images, or are they just thumbnails of the images?

Each of the images should be at least a couple of MB. Transfer them to your PC and ensure you can open them before deleting them off your device. As mentioned above, you also have the option of uploading to the cloud (Google Photos/Dropbox/OneDrive etc), then you can sync back to your PC, or access from the cloud anywhere.
