Hi

I have an issue with my laptop. It won’t load windows and crashes into a loop every time I turn it on. I tried the repair option but didn’t work. I ran a diagnostic check and got an error 0142 hard drive fault.

Now the laptop is near 10 years old with very minimum usage. Would it be worth fixing?

Also how would I go about getting all my pictures and files off it if hard drive is faulty?

was it on windows 10?
what cpu and ram specs does it have?

if it's capable of running windows 10 well - minimum i3 cpu and 4gb (but preferably 6gb ram but you could maybe 4 gb cheap) then it could be worth buying a cheap sata 2.5 inch ssd (30 quid or so for 240gb size), downloading win 10 from microsoft and installing from usb key (setting to allow this should be in bios)

if it's a pretty crappy cpu though I would just not bother to be honest.

i5-460M in xps - i5 but 1st gen (now 10th gen) and benchmark results are not great.

might be worth buying the cheap ssd and loading up with win 10

10 years old not worth having someone fix it for you, potentially worth fixing it yourself though.

The main thing for me is to get the pictures off the old hard drive. How would one go about it?

Where’s the best place to pick up a hard drive online?

for your old drive I don't know - sounds like that it may be done for

you could buy this / something like this and take out your old spinning 2.5 inch hd from your pc and put it into this for usb connection

if that works then it could be the connection internally that is gone in which case the ssd won't work but you could return it in that case.

it's most likely the spinning hd itself that is dead - may be hard to recover from unless you pay $$$ to a recovery company

I actually have an external hard drive I can use.

So when I get to the windows 10 repair window I selected the command prompt option. I can select the C and D drive on the laptop and view the contents of each directory. I can also find the external hard drive F. All the pictures are on the D drive so my question is, is there a command I can use to copy the pictures from one drive to another? Now, I had a google online and found the commands xcopy and robocopy but they only transferred the files and not the directories in full.
