Connection Speed drops dramatically when on Video Call

I'm on a Virgin Media 500Mbps connection, when using on Wifi I can usually get between 80-100Mbps, as soon as I go on any sort of video call or screen share the speed drops to almost dial up speeds, the connection then keeps dropping and the call is totally unstable.

I had Virgin out on Saturday, they split the network to 2.4Ghz and 5, the idea being I use one for work and everything else on the other. This has made no difference.

I did try with an ethernet connection and while the speed was fine the connection kept dropping.

Any ideas where to even start fixing this? VM tech support haven't been able to get anywhere.

Are you doing the speed test on the same device as the video call or a different one? I'd be trying to rule out the possibility of the CPU being highly loaded and prioritising the call over the test.

Yep, have done the speedtest on my phone while calling off the laptop

Have you tried a different laptop? Or video call client?

I have the Virgin Media 500 package too and never had an issue with video calls on Zoom, Skype, or MS Teams.

I only have the one laptop, I'm using MS Teams mainly. I'll try out a different client though
