Sell cattle most years on DD

We will take a cheque and cattle can be collected when it clears.

    Or cash.

Expect the same when we buy.

cheques from people I know, otherwise bank transfer or cash

I sell almost all in the factories but occasionally when selling privately, bank transfers for large amounts or I use sumup for card payments so I don't have to worry about waiting for cheques to clear.

I've regularly seen the people you know can be the biggest culprits regarding payment. Money is scarce out there. Trust nobody is safe advice imo.

Wouldn't be a fan of cash at all. Friday night of an August bank holiday in 2018 two lorries came down form the North with two bags of cash for 2 loads of straw not far from here... Well guess how the story ends!

I sell most animals through DD now. Thankfully it's usually repeat customers now so there's not many ad's needed. If I'm selling I want to be paid by cheque, bank draft or online and once it clears the animals or machine can leave the yard. I get the odd bit of cash but being honest I don't want it. It still has to be lodged and countes before anything leaves the yard also. Going forward I'd perfer the online payment into my account. I know some farmers still sell through the mart even if the animals don't go through the ring.

Had a close escape with a cattle dealer in my younger days, you can't buy that sort of experience.

Some older buyers have been known to walk away in a huff when you want the cheque to clear first, what about if the seller pulls a fast one and holds onto the cattle when the cheque clears?

I buy calves off the same person every year and I have to collect them on Wednesday. He’s about 45mins away. Will the travel restrictions apply or will I be able to travel?

Once you have the cattle box on sure its farming related

Always pay cheque here when I'm taking the cattle. If someone wanted to wait for the cheque to clear they can keep them.

Now that's the grey area. Technically that would look like site work. You can fight the corner that it's for dung but it would depend on the guard you meet I suppose

Well farming is farming really. I get your point and all depends on the guard too I suppose. Saying that be hard to run into a guard around here.

Must be all sellers here dan. would be thinking the same myself. Maybe seller might allow you take the cards with you till cheque clears and you then collect stock.

i think that way both have something in any event. is there a paper trail for farm to farm movement or is it only online now?

We’re testing Monday and Tuesday with reading later in the week so will be on the road a lot. Imagine if a guard makes me head home, the veg would be fair bulling.

I did speak to Dept last week and they were very clear that I must test. When asked about social distance he said use a longer stick, I **** you not.

If twas a department vet doing it would he/ she be happy to work on their own at the crush while farmer loaded it from pen only, I'd have my doubts...

Vet rang this pm to see if we were going ahead, we agreed if we postponed I could be some time before we’d test again. Lot of stock to sell so really have no option.

Told vet we’d load crush but wouldn’t be beside him to keep heads up, he said he’d manage that. We set up an old sheep handing unit in calf house to do calves. I think we’re sorted.

You’re right about dept vet, no way are they going to expose themselves.

Almost 50 years on the go here. The only time I got caught was when an abattoir went belly up.

    I'll take my chances.

Donedeal must attract every looper going. I've a foster cow up there at the min, with a price on and the amount of messer I've had ring me is unreal. Had one lad offer 500 under the asking price without even seeing the cow. It's nearly more hassle than it's worth.

It depends on how much hassle other options are.

For us taking a day of work to hang abkut the mart is a bigger problem.

I can field off calls from the idiot brigade from DoneDeal but we’ve never failed to get buyers. Make appointments that suit us, they travel to see stock so showing them takes very little time on our schedule.

Bought a cheap scales so no rubbish over weights.

Recently I sold a fee things on DD. Yes I got a few loopers texting low offers. I do not even reply to them. Both items sold in 24 hours. One was an in demand item which I priced strong but it sold and the other which need repair was priced to sell. I do not hold items unless a lad is on the way. If someone tells me he coming down that evening or tomorrow I tell him to ring before leaving. Both lads travelled 50+ miles to buy

Its a great way of shifting things that might not be much use to you anymore but could be useful for someone else.

Or POA, price on arrival. As I have told more than one of them I would not o across the road to see cattle unless I know the price. Usually they are prices at a top rate and are 80-100 kgs lighter when you go to see them

It's about 10x worse when you're female :pac:
Dad wants me to put that bull of ours up soon, I'll have to brave it at some stage. Used to be ok in the old house, could just ring the door bell & I'd get off the phone that way. No doorbell in this house and I'm not the type to just hang up as I feel kinda sorry for them wanting a chat. Will have to become a ruthless auld biddy I think!

What really gets on my goat on done deal is sellers typing in €1234, for items like tractors etc that are way above that price. Put up the real price!! What’s the point. Do they like the sound of their phone ringing.

Right pain in hole. Tis as easy put up a close price as that. The lads selling constantly on DD get hardened enough. Was buying a vicon last yr and was pressing a lad as hard as possible to get a better price over the phone before I'd travel. He was getting a bit vexed and shouted down the phone 'tis ***** like you that know the price of everything and the value of nothing that drives me ****in demented are ya coming to look at it or **** off wasting my time' . Thought it was a good one. Got a good machine off him too!!

Ya the first thing I do is filter off anything without price, that's why they put the 1234 on it so it will come up on filtered page. Same way they put every make tractor name at the end of the add to make them come up when you do a filtered search.

I was on the lookout for a goodish galvanised yard scraper on Donedeal for a while now. Saw one for sale an hour away and rang. Seemed ok on the one photo he had up. He said it was working fine. Agreed the price over the phone, same as he had up on the add.
When I got there the scraper had a crack on the beam that holds the rubber and it was welded back up. Annoyed me that he had hidden it from view on the photo. Scraper works fine but still came away thinking, he had pulled one over on me. Same guy sells tractors. I don't think I'd like to be buying from him.

I sell pedigree bulls here on Donedeal. Always put up plenty of photos, price, full figures, pedigree etc. I put up a price and always come down a bit. Always throw a luck penny in aswell. That way buyer feels better going away. I never failed to sell once I have them in the yard. Last time I put up an add, guy rang from wicklow and was willing to travel to Clare to buy.

I have advertised stuff and always put up the price because it stops the fellas messing hoping to get a bargain.
Anyone trying to negotiate on the phone with me doesn't get much hop because
    A. When they arrive they negotiate again
    B. I put it to them.. Would you haggle over a animal on the strength of a photo?
    C. A fella rang me over a trailer that wasn't selling for days and each day he tried to negotiate and each I refused. On the 4th day the trailer sold no bother. He called the 5th day and I was delighted to tell him it was sold and the fact that he missed a very genuine implement at a reasonable price.
