OP, consider using a retired smartphone (connected to your house Wi-Fi) and a bluetooth speaker. Much cheaper than an internet radio.

thanks for suggestion! I just really like the idea and neatness of having a normal radio can flick on and off when hands wet or messy doing kitchen stuff

An Alexa would be best for this then. You don’t even need to touch it to change stations

Be careful of Roberts. I bought a refurb 93i last October from the company themselves. Has been a nightmare. I was happy at the time as I saved about €80 on the cost of a new model. However I had to post if back three times (€18 postage each time) as it keeps developing a power supply issue. I still have the problem and they are now ignoring me totally and refusing to answer my emails. I have about 15 radios of various types (AOR, Icom, Uniden, Sony, Logitech, Realistic, Pioneer, SDR Play) that don’t give any trouble so I am pretty sure it is not me.
They are probably fine if nothing goes wrong but I had issues and I would consider them the worst company that I have dealt with from a Customer Service viewpoint. I recognise that I took a chance with a refurb but I still want to buy an Internet radio and it won’t be from Roberts!

thanks but I've used Alexa before and just never found the voice commands thing that great. Think I might just prefer the simplicity of a little radio. Thanks for the suggestion though

Just get a cheap smartphone and get Tunein and a bluetooth speaker, no advantage to Internet Radios anymore.

I use a small Samsung tablet I bought specifically for the purpose and a Bose Minilink speaker. Superb, rich sound.

OP, there's two posters above who agree with me. I wouldn't spend a bucketload of money on an internet radio.

Power City used to do a cheap 19.99 internet radio...some generic Chinese name that I can't remember. It was fine if you wanted basic - no ability to store favourites etc..

Myself I like the Tangent Quattro. They aren't made any more, but I have a collection of them from 2nd hand ads etc..

Robert are no longer the quality company or product they used to be.

Had a Roberts radio in our kitchen that lasted 35 years. It was so good we could pick up RTE clear as a bell (LW) when were were living in England. That's been replaced by two other Robert radio's in the last 6 years. The first one reception of some Irish radio stations (now living again in Ireland) could be very sketchy and the last one crackled badly any time we touched the knobs.
It appears every brand is now made in the far east so brand names dont count as much as they used to.

Now we have an alexa echo and its been brilliant.

Thanks so much to everyone for all suggestions, been very helpful. I didn't bother going into details in first post, but thinking of buying for an elderly relative here, someone who would just have zero patience for fiddling around with "technology" as they might see it.
I can see there are many better ways and setups to tune in to a foreign radio station, but seeing as the person in mind is difficult to buy for and selfless who'd never think to ask for anything, I may just pull some siblings together at xmas and splash for joint present of an overpriced internet radio! no rush on it anyway sure
Thanks again to everyone for showing me the pros&cons

I also agree with a Google Mini or Nest speaker.

With my Nest Mini I can just say "OK Google (station)" and it'll play that station without any other keywords, at least with various station names I tried.

E.g. try saying "OK Google RTE Radio 1", "Hey Google Midwest Radio", etc.

That's cool. Never heard of it before. Great for random channel hopping. I've downloaded the app.
