Hey guys just looking for some clarification as I don't know much about cars. I currently am looking at purchasing a new car which I would hope would do me for the next 4 years or so. I have my eye 181 Audi A3 which has 55,000 km in mileage. Is that mileage considered high or low for a car that is 2 years old?

For an Audi a3 it would be considered on the high side. Not excessively so that I would dismiss it but there will be lots of lower mileage ones. I have a 2014 A6 I bought with similar mileage 58000kms in 2018.

Nice car by the way the A3, is it saloon or hatch? If you keep it for 4 years and do average mileage it will even things out a bit. Price is key here. And get an S Line if you can, look much better, easier to sell on but do have a slightly firmer ride.

Used to be that 12,000 miles was the acceptable average per year
that would be about 19,300 Km per year

Seems the car you have your eye on has higher mileage than would be normal

Bear in mind though that a high mileage vehicle that has been serviced regularly by the book could still be a better purchase than a low mileage vehicle that has not had it regular servicing.

Is this car being offered by a dealer? Has it a full service history?
If it is being offered by a dealer with full service history (not just his word, but a stamped service book) and they are willing to give you a warranty on the vehicle it might be worth considering.
You can use the high mileage to try negotiate a lower price.

If it is a private sale, I would suggest you take someone along with you who is a competent enough mechanic to assess the car first if you are still thinking of buying it.

When buying cars its always best to go to websites such as done deal, or look in the papers for adverts posted by dealers, and look for adverts for cars of the same model year and mileage. This will give you an indication of market values and typical mileage done for a car of that model and age.

If a car is being offered for a lower price than normal there's usually a good reason for that, other than quick sale, change of circumstance etc etc.
Its normally because it high mileage, or needs some sort of attention to fix a problem.

If it's diesel I'd expect that much on it otherwise it wouldn't be getting the driving a diesel needs. That would be a bigger worry than the mileage.

What condition is the car in, what is the service history like, how well priced is it towards other similar cars? Mileage for the most part is only a figure on the dashboard, there are other more important factors involved in whether it is a good buy or not.

For what it's worth 55k km is 34k miles on a 2 year old car, I wouldn't consider that high by any means.

Thanks everyone for the replies. The car is a diesel hatchback which I would be purchasing from a dealer. It has had 1 owner. I will ask about the service history when I call in to test drive. I drive alot myself with my work so hoping to purchase something reliable.

Mileage is about right for a diesel, there was a face lift model I think in 16/17 just make sure it's the new model. There's a new version just about to be released so take that into account when buying as it will effect resale value when you decide to sell.

How much driving are you gonna do in those 4 years?

If you're going to be driving say 10k per year, that's still gonna be less than 100k km on a 6 year car when you'll be trying to sell it. This should be easy to sell car anyway.

On the other hand if you'll be driving 20k km per year, then it would 135kkm car at 6 years, so probably less sellable than <100kkm car. In that case try to find something with low mileage like 20kkm now.

And if you're going to be driving loads like 50kkm per year, it will make no difference if car had 220kkm or 255kkm at 6 years, it will be very hard to sell anyway.

    I purchased a 3.5 year old car in 2013 with 130kkm.
Now this car is at 300kkm at 10.5 year old and still driving completely faultless for me. Not intending to sell it anytime soon.
