Declaring a car off the road for tax

    Hi ,

I have purchased a vehicle which requires some work doing to it before it will be able to pass a test . I want to declare it off the road , and have the form to do so .

My question stems from the wording on the form. The form states that the minimum period for the declaration is three months ,however it also states on the same form that " a vehicle can be licensed any time during the declared period of non-use . This will terminate the declaration of non-use ."
So if I declare it off the road for three months and then happen to have the work done and the vehicle tested after two months and go to tax the vechile will I be liable for back tax on the two months ? Or does the tax disk commence from the month I actually attend the tax office to pay it's tax .

The tax commences in the calendar month you resume paying the tax.

I don’t think you can drive it to the NCT center once it enters the off road period. I had to retax my car just to get it NCT’d. Watch out for the off-road declaration’s end of date - I forgot to extend the off-road declaration while overseas and had to pay arrears for two months when I got back. My car then failed the NCT and I’m now scrapping it :( So I paid road tax for over 4 months for the car parked on my driveway and only taken on public roads for the NCT and back.

You can pay the tax online, no need to go to the tax office.

    Best,
    /t

Surely you should have just risked it? The odds of you being caught are extremely low if you are only going to an NCT centre for a one off test.

I've read in numerous official docs that you can drive to nct while declared off road.

    Scroll down to Q15!
One thing to mention is if your car has an expired NCT then it is in law illegal to drive it on a public road full stop!

So I can have it off the road for two months really despite the form saying three months is the minimum

Three months is the minimum period you can 'declare' it off the road, it's not the minimum you have to be off.....

Also, you must declare it off the road within 21 days of buying it. I fell foul of this rule as I had problems getting the car into my own name. I'm now liable for the back tax from the day I bought it for 3 months.

I didn’t want to risk getting any penalty points, also I wasn’t sure if the NCT would test a car with an expired tax disc.

Thanks for the replies and info ,will visit the tax office today and have it sworn off the road. Hoping to not have issues , as it has been over 21 days since purchase (approx 26) but I only got the log book two days ago in the post so couldn't do it before now ..
