It was with sadness that I learned today of the passing of British astronomer and broadcaster Heather Couper, who died yesterday after a short illness at age 70.

To a generation of children in the 1980s and 1990s, Professor Couper was a regular fixture on our televisions on shows about astronomy, space science and space exploration. She had a real passion for her subject and was a brilliant communicator. My own love of astronomy was kindled by both Heather Couper and the late, great Patrick Moore.
