If you connect to WiFi -does this automatically switch off your mobile data?

No, but it stops using it when connected to WiFi that has a working internet connection.

It would still kick in if needed. E.g. MMS messages etc.

If your wifi drops out it will switch back to mobile data. You can turn off mobile data though, so it never switches to it.
