    Hi all,

I had a coolant warning on my 2017 BMW 3 series yesterday.

Can anyone advise if I must use a oem BMW coolant to top up? If so, where do I get it as I'm over an hour from the nearest dealer and I cant find one online that delivers to Ireland.

I see Micks garage have a yellow Prestone coolant/antifreeze that seems to be BMW compliant. Would this do the job?

    Many thanks. All advices welcome!!

Your owners manual will have the specifications for coolant type to use, just buy the correct type from any motor factors. Your car needs coolant now if you want to drive it, don't go mail order.

You will need to find out why the light came on also, so check for obvious leaks when topping up if nothing obvious you'll need to get a mechanic to check it out.

Is your BMW a diesel and has it had the EGR cooler recall check?
A drop in coolant can be one of the signs of a problem with the EGR cooler.

It could be just a case of low coolant but it could also be a symptom of the above. I wouldn't take the chance. Ring BMW or your local dealer and see what they say.

    Thanks for replies.

The warning came on yesterday and I didnt notice anything about a recall!

The car was serviced in Joe Duffy last May and no mention of recall or work done.

I will contact the dealer immediately!

    Thanks so much for advice.

Sorry - yes; it is a diesel but was not recalled. I'm going to give Joe Duffy a ring.
