I have an outside oil burner for central heating and in the last few days when i switch on the heating the pipes start banging, from doing a bit of googling one suggestion i saw was to turn down thermostat temp at the boiler. what temp should this be set at. what other reasons might there be for this starting to happen all of a sudden

sorry, this question has pro been asked 100 times

If there is a small tank (feed & expansion tank) in the "attic" check its water level, ballcock could be stuck. If a sealed system with a red expansion vessel, it will have a pressure gauge, this should be ~ 1 bar when cold and can be re pressurised via the mains/isolation valve(s).
