Should I stay or should I go?

I don’t usually post here very often, but I was just hoping to get some opinions ( other than family and friends) on a problem i currently have.

I work in the cruise industry and am currently in between contacts on my holidays here in Ireland, due back on a ship soon in Asia.

I’ve been keeping a close eye on what’s happening with the coronavirus and am worried about going back on a ship because I know how fast it can spread in that environment, especially after reading about the princess ship that now has 61 confirmed cases.

My head is telling me that the right thing is to stay at home and try look for a new job but my heart is set on going because I love the job and I’m convinced I will be fired it I delay or don’t turn up for the contract, I guess another thing I’m worried about is I would need quiet a lot of money to set myself up again in Ireland. My parents house is in the midlands and I would need a car for any chance of getting a job. So car/insurance/ tax etc. I’m just not sure if I can get all that at the moment and just don’t want to end up on the dole :/

Sooo i would appreciate and comments or advice on what you would do in the same situation.

I wouldn't go as there are serious risks. Can you get a temp job in another country to tide you over? Have you spoken to your employer to explore alternatives?

BTW - I'd get the thread moved to PI as you will prob get more appropriate responses on there rather than After Hours...

    Follow your heart.

Your company will have as much interest in you getting sick and you do, they’ll take the necessary precautions.

Being on the dole in the midlands vs a cruise ship job travelling the world?

My employer is fairly strict with how much time you can get off in between contracts, I’ve already been on holiday for a while now so can’t imagine they will give me more time off. I never really thought about another country but yeah I will look into that..

Sorry I didn’t know where to post it, I usually don’t post on here but read a lot, how do I get it changed?

Yeah, fair few cruise ships on quarantine at the moment. I'd stay where you are, until things settle down. Plenty of cruise ships arriving in Ireland these days, you may be able to find work takes you around the world and visit home from time to time.

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

    Where in Asia?

All over really, I would be joining in Japan. But it goes to Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, there is a cruise with more Chinese ports but I think that’s cancelled. Thailand Singapore

Maybe if you go to your local GP and explain the situation they could give you a note for a serious back strain that requires bed rest for two weeks, or the likes. You can scan it over to them. They won't be sending any doctor out to the Midlands to double check, as I know some of the airlines do that in peak periods.

Definitely don't go back at the moment, it's just not worth the risk.

Go for it, what’s the worst that could happen?

I've just read that they (CLIA) are cancelling all passengers who have travelled through or are from Macau,HK or China in the last 14 days

    If that helps!

Dole would be only temporary I hope. I’ve travelled all the Asia area before so I don’t feel like I would be missing out on to much in terms of ports but I feel a bit gutted that I might have to leave my job. To be honest from my previous experience of working on the ships the passengers get priority when it comes to the medical centre.

Seems like you already know the answer to your question.

Actually coming to think of it would I even be allowed get the dole? It’s been about 2 years since I last worked in Ireland so I wouldn’t have been paying tax in that time

Btw I just read a article that the ship I was assigned to is actually getting refused from entering in slot of ports and the cruise I was supposed to join has actually been completely cancelled. I could get re assigned to another ship in the fleet that’s not in Asia. Thanks for the comments, I’ll stay in Ireland for now and if in the future when all this calms down I will just reapply for another job on a ship.

Whats it like on the cruise ship? Hard work, pressure, drunk oldies kicking up a stir about trivial matters?
