New heating system for granite house

    Hi All

Myself and the other half are buying an old granite cottage style house and I'm just looking for a few suggestions regarding heating.

The house was renovated about a decade ago and it has oil central heating (non condensing). The burner likely isn't the most efficient but the radiators all look brand new. So the question is, to future proof the house, should we simply go with a new condensing burner or go all out with a new Air-water heat pump?

Are there any special considerations for half meter thick granite walls? i.e. Letting the stone "breath", accounting for it's thermal mass and keeping a constant temp in the house?

Solar panels/EV car could be in the pipeline

I wouldn't fit a heat pump in anything other than a new build where airtightness and insulation are right up to standard. Anything else will be too inefficient and will result in large esb bills.
Also, if the burner is in good condition, you.might as well keep it. Do rough calcs between a modern burner and your burner efficiency and it might take a frighteningly long time to get your money back.

I'd insulate to the best level possible. Get a specialist to design a suitable wall solution.
