Hi folks, could somebody tell me if engine oil 5W30 corresponds to VW502 or VW504, or to neither of them?

Apologies if this thread is in the wrong place, I'm not too sure where it belongs.

    Many thanks.

Go to a motor factors, not a halfords, and ask for oil. Chances are they will want your reg and will be able to find the oil based on your reg.

It might do, you'd need to check the specific brand. Our cars require VW507 and BMW LL04 and you can get 5W30 oils that meet either or none of those specs for example. Not sure if any meet both.

Castrol (for example) should produce oils to those specs. The VW specs usually supersede each other too, so higher numbers can often meet the lower specs aswell.

All a bit confusing. You might find Tesco has good prices on brand name oils, I got a couple of litres of Castrol Edge there for topping up for a tenner each.

I have often bought Castrol Edge there, very keenly priced!

Some brands 5w30 will meet 50200 / 50400. You need to check the spec on the bottle really.
50200 / 50400 is are around a while now and oil should be affordable when compared to the likes of 50700 which can also be got in 5w30.

The easiest thing you can do - just go to the oil manufacturer's websites and to the "Oil Finder" section, put the details of your car and it will list all recommended oils.

    For example:

Why not go to halfords? OP knows what spec they need, just read the labels. It's the same stuff in the motor factors.

Because most motor factors have the automotive parts software that can match the correct spec oil via the car's reg. Halfords won't do that to best of my knowledge. Also most motor factors are Irish owned, quite like the motor factors my family own and run, so support local and keep your euro local.

"Irish owned" so you've an axe to grind then? Halfords have tablets where you can insert reg and car make/model to filter down what you need. But in all honesty, the shelf is there if you know what you are looking for as th OP clearly does, just read the label. It's not that difficult.

I never saw the point in answering someone looking for help, in a manner that makes them dependant on someone else. It's very easy to inform them without that bias you have.

Why are you putting Irish owner in inverted commas? All motor factors in Ireland bar the recently sold PR Reilly to ECP are Irish owned and in the majority of cases, small one man operations.
You're correct I do have a bias, but it is an informed bias. Halford's whole business model is based around people who haven't a clue. Who charges €20 to fit a bulb or a set of wipers? You proved my point too, "they have an app" to help you find what you want and it will be sitting on a shelf. Go into ANY motor factors and they will pull it off the shelf for you and hand it to you. If you ask would they mind topping it up, they will more than likely oblige. They will probably also spot the low coolant, blown bulb or cracked number plate and suggest a replacement.
I make no apologies for my original post.

Thats all fine supporting the local motor factors until you look at the price you can get stuff elsewhere. Fuchs 5w30 vw 504 507 costs 40 euro in the motor factors.

35 euro in the main dealer

i bought 20l online for 93 euros delivered to the door a while back.

Economics have to come into it

My local MF are really competitive with their prices. Sometimes IV bought stuff in there because I needed it, and didn't even look online to later find they were cheaper anyway.

To answer the OP original question, you are quoting numbers that measure different things.

The 0w30, 5w30, 5w40 type numbers refer to the oils viscosity at different temperatures. How thick it is really.

The vw504 is a standard that a manufacturer (in this case VW) state the oil must meet.

As Mr bond says, I'd recommend going to your local motor factors and they'll keep you right.

Thanks vintagevrs, this is finally making sense. :)

Thanks to everyone else who answered, too, by the way.
