VRT penalty

    Hi,

(I’m new to the forum so please move if this post isn’t in the right place)

I bought a car that has northern plates in 2017 and exported it a month after I bought it and got the blue certificate of export. It was sitting in a garage in the north for around a year and a bit though I can’t prove this as it was a friends garage. I then moved it to my house in the state where it has been sitting for around 10-11 months.

I know that the penalty is 0.1% every day that the VRT isn’t paid, My question is will I be liable to pay the VRT penalty from when the car was exported or from the day it entered the state? Remember I can’t prove that it was stored in a garage, though I can prove when it interests the state.

Also is the Nox charges still a thing? Would I have to pay the VRT, the penalty and then the Nox charges? The VRT of today is €494 and as I understand the Nox emitted from the car is 144, though this was found from an internet search as I don’t have the V5C logbook for the car.

    Thank you in advance

Why did you wait so long to decide to register it in the state.
Revenue will base the penalty when you imported the car into the state based on the documents you have.
Is the NOX charge still a thing? It was only introduced on Jan 1st. Care to provide some details of the car?Although i suspect your NOX charge based on 144 is going to be very high.

You cannot VRT it without the V5c.

If you have that old blue export cert it will go by the date stated as exported on that.(these documents aren't printed anymore but can still be used)

You will need to provide official documentation for proof of the NOx as that is not on the export cert and if you don't provide that the NOx will default to €600 for petrol or €4800 for diesel.

And yes the NOx charge that came in 30 days ago is still a thing :) yes to VRT+NOx+penalties. By the way the penalties are calculated on the VRT and NOx x .01% per day
