Actual process of buying a new car

    Hi All

First time car buyer and looking for some advice on what the exact process is on buying a new car

IE I have arranged a test drive for the car I know I want, I turn up on the day with a deposit, know in advance that that there is a scrappage allowance on my car. I do the test drive, tell the car dealer yes, its the car I want, I want to buy on hire purchase, lets go talk in the office.
    What happens then?

Do you haggle over the price ?
Is there a deposit taken there and then?
Is my current car valued then and there for scrappage confirmation?
Does the car dealership have their own banks or do you have to have your own bank finance arranged in advance?
Does the car dealer take things like your bank statements etc ?
Do you pick out the particular version of the car you want there and then or only at a later date when approved by the bank?
If going with the car dealers bank for finance, how long does it take to get approval-days/weeks/months?
Generally speaking is it long between saying "yes I want to buy" and car dealer actually placing the order?
Anything else I haven't thought of?

Apologies for the questions, just want to get as much advice as I can upfront!

Dealers can look after finance for you. But as always shop around on that and check your own bank or credit union.

If you're placing an order you'll normally give something small, maybe a few hundred. If the cars in stock you should have it pretty quickly, if it's a factory order it can be a few months.

Don't just go to one dealer either, go to a few. Decide on the colour/spec you want in advance so you can compare like with like. You will probably see some variation in price and it will give you something to haggle with as opposed to going in blind. If you're worried about servicing or warranty work afterwards you can bring it to any franchise for that brand even if it was bought elsewhere.

Do you have a particular car in mind? Lots of people here have good knowledge of deals available on particular makes and models and will be well able to advise you what to push for?
The fact you mentioned scrappage means you might be looking in a certain direction....

Thanks for the replies , appreciated the advice

Am looking at a Peugeot 2008 petrol as being the car. Suits my needs of good back seat passenger space and good boot space.

Plan is to go in with decent deposit and take advantage of scrappage offer, thus meaning smaller(hopefully) monthly repayments.

So you can place the order on the day you do the test drive ?

IF going through a dealer is it long(days/weeks) before the dealers bank comes back with approval necessary for the car dealer to ring the factory etc and request the car?

    Thanks again for the advice

I am not sure 100%, but new 2008 is coming. So maybe good deals on outgoing model. Just make sure to test drive it and maybe some competition, before deciding.
Pay attention at APR they give you too. Some brands can do 0% other still can be as high as 5.9%. does not look like big difference, but higher apr does add to over all cost. Don't focus on monthly payments, focus on over all cost.
Don't know with pug, but in seat, I got approved for PCP finance in about 15min. That could be the benefit of VW bank and no need to go to third party bank as some brands have to do.
You don't need to place any deposit for test drive. Just go in or call in and say you interest in car A and want to test drive. Then talk to them. Even better, do it with few dealerships around country for same car. Prices and deals vary.
In most cases they will have some cars in cookie cutter specs in stock not registered. So you won't need to wait few months for the car to be built for you. In this case you might even haggle some discount as dealers will always want to push out stock they have instead build new.

You can place the order the day of the test drive but don't. If they think you're too keen it will cost you in the pocket.

Seat are doing similar deals at the moment on the Arona, very similar car and VW back have lower APR rates which might give better value.

Actually forgot to add OP, for the love of feck that is very dear to you, do your own research on PCP and what it means and how it works. There are some good threads here with actual people doing it and telling their experience and opinions. Don't get blinded by low monthly payments, look in to whole PCP deal.

If you go in with deposit and ready to order you will pay top dollar.

By all means take a test drive, spend 45 mins with the sales guy on the configuration, trade in, scrap page and finance stuff ... get a quote with everything on it .. finance rates, scrapage allowance, cost to change etc.

Then walk out and say you will be in touch with in a couple of days. Go to a couple of other dealers armed with that info and see what they offer and then start haggling.

I’ve just ordered a new car. I visited three dealers and got three quotes .. eventually ordered it from the local dealer who had to come down and match the best other quote I got.

The new Renault Captur is out in dealers now and avalible to order too. They have some in dealers already. Its just like the 2008 and is an excellent car. It has got lots a great reviews. Well worth checking out OP. New Ford Puma as well but that might be more expensive and a bit bigger.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Thanks everyone for the education ! Really appreciated.

Lots of knowledge gained , just have a couple of other questions:

Re Scrappage: I have a pre 2011 Peugeot car so does that mean that I have definite scrappage on a new Peugeot 2008? Will my existing Peugeot be accepted as scrappage if I went for say a Nissan Juke/Seat Arona etc.

Re "POA" Price on Application; Does this mean that basically the price is negotiable and you need to haggle with the dealer?

PS -PCP- not mad on it , so intend to do HP as I like the idea of knowing I have to pay X amt over Y years, and its done.

Thanks again for all the advice etc
