Signed public health care waiver

    Hi,
My 6 month old was recently taken into hospital where his nappy was full of blood so you can imagine I was in a pretty panicked state, he was admitted and while there I was phoned on my mobile twice for me to go down to reception as my signature was required on an insurance form, at the time I had no idea what I went down to sign as I just wanted to get back up to my baby.
I have now received a bill of 700 euro for one night's stay as even though I had but my son on my health insurance his waiting period was not up.
As I said, I had no idea at the time what I was signing (stupid I know) but is it right that they can charge me this much?

Are you sure your son is not covered on your insurance? As long as your new born is added to your policy within 13 weeks of their birth the waiting period does not apply.

The public health care waiver form is a big problem as a lot of people don't understand the implications of what they are signing, or like in your case, have far more pressing things on their mind like getting the treatment they need. Unfortunately when you signed the form you agreed you would be charged the private insurance rate (€800 - €1000) instead of the public rate (€80).

Your best bet is to go back to the hospital and explain the situation and offer to pay the public rate instead and see how get on.

Are you being charged this bill by your health insurance because they recived a hospital bill and your son is still in a waiting period, or did you receive this bill from the hospital?

Send the bill to your insurers and ask them to deal with it.
