    I’ve been offered a 2000 BMW Z3 for nothing.

Yeah I’m well aware it’s worthless, got the wrong 1.9 engine, a soft top and it’s been off the road since 2006. The only thing going for it is it’s low mileage of 70k.

The story is its sat indoors since the owner moved from the UK in 2006, so it’s been sitting here since then in a shed.

I know they’re a highly undesirable car... is it fit for breaking only considering the back charges on VRT plus NOX.

Is it worth my while at all?

Am I liable for MASSIVE arrears?

you're getting a potentially desirable car for nothing. Surely worth paying the taxes

Why on earth didn't they re-reg it when they could do it for free!

Yeah, its a potentially desirable car .... but only for somebody who REALLY wants it and plans to keep it.

If you are just looking to fix it up and maybe sell it on at a profit then you first need to work out its economic value. By this I mean, if you wanted to buy one "on the road" what would a similar one cost. If you look in the classified ads. I had a quick look and you are looking at about €3-4k.

If it hasn't been runnin in nearly 14 years, its likely to need a serious mechanical over haul, and consumables like filters, tyres etc. replaced. If you have to pay somebody to do this work for you plus the registration cost its going to be borderline uneconomical.

    Car is switching owners.

So OP, your biggest issue here is not the lack of cost, it's the restoration after it sitting idle for so long.
Do you have the time and inclination to look for and swap perished hoses, bushes etc?

I had a similar situation with a 1997 BMW 325 coupe .. sat idle for 5 years ... eventually I gave up on it .. after that length of time everything was falling apart.

Runners everywhere were perished, creaking rattling .. thermostat went, ABS module died .. fuel lines had severe corrosion ... brakes and suspension ...

It was a money pit and just wasn’t worth it !

Update on this. The owner now thinks it's worth a fortune after seeing some online for 3/4k so I walked away. It was somewhat attractive for free given it would probably have needed a tonne of stuff replaced plus the price of clearing but now...it will sit in a shed for eternity.

I'd say it would be a heart ache to restore unless you have acres of time, patience and money.
