VRT trouble

I recently bought a van in Newry and the seller got me sign the UK logbook and then he posted it over to the DVLA in Swansea. Almost 3 months later I haven't received it. I've rang the DVLA and they told me they posted out the logbook after 4 weeks. And can't issue a new one as the vehicle is off their system. Anyone any ideas what I can do now.

You were supposed to take the V5 with you. You won’t be able to VRT it now.

Ring them and ask them to send you a permanent export certificate for the van in your name

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,686 ✭✭✭User1998

They stopped issuing permanent export certs a few months ago

didnt know that. The DVLA will have to sort it out some way.

OP are you a resident in Southern Ireland? You said the DVLA said they posted a new logbook but they definitely wouldn’t have done that if the address you provided when filling out the logbook was in Southern Ireland.

Yeah I'm in the South, gave a southern address and never recieved the book

Yeah they won’t send a logbook to an address in Ireland. Do you have any family or friends in the UK or N.I? Someone else here will advice exactly what to do but it’s something along the lines of the friend/family member either applying for a new logbook or purchasing the car from you and then posting you the logbook. If you know someone in the UK/NI who can do that for you you’ll be grand. If not it might be difficult

Yeah have family in Northern Ireland. Thanks for that, if anyone has any more info on the logistics it would be most helpful

The problem is the DVLA don’t have to do anything except follow their own procedures.

Yes there very unhelpful people ! Wether it’s us being Irish or them being welsh

Another issue you will have is with the vrt office as it should of been vrt,d within 30 days and they will fine you a percentage of the value of the vehicle for every day you are over the 30.so in your case 60 days.

With respect, it’s because you didn’t know the procedure and neither did the dealer. It’s hardly the DVLA’s fault as unlike the equivalent processes here, it is all stated in black and white on the instructions for the V5 and on their website. They cannot register it to a foreign address and they have no proof that you are the legitimate owner so cannot deal with you. The dealer was probably never the registered owner and this would find it next to impossible to obtain a replacement V5.

Could you get the original seller to re apply for the v5 and do it the right way then.

You cannot renew a GB licence once you are no longer living there and it’s been that way since the licences were harmonised across Europe which is more than 10 years ago. You can exchange it (as I had to do) and there have been plenty of campaigns to alert people to this. You just now need to hope that the Euro Parliament ratifies the withdrawal agreement as otherwise your licence will be. A dead letter on 1 Feb (v unlikely).

Only if they knew who the registered keeper was. The dealer has likely sent off the “taken into the trade” slip when he bought the car but that does not entitle it to a new V5.

Dealer will be able to put in for a new v5, similar to dealers here....

There’s no such thing as an English licence plus whatever you hold is not a valid licence if you falsely have a U.K. address at which you don’t reside for more than 183 days a year to renew it! It’s simply a cheap piece of plastic!

No intention of changing it , the Gardai love it ! I’m not looking to exchange it

I was only trying to help op he can’t get them to sent it to an Irish address !

I can try that. I'll ring him tomorrow. He was sound enough on the day of purchase so hopefully he might do me a favour

And that’s grand until the Garda has any reason to question it as genuine in which case you would not be facing a few penalty points or a short ban but a prosecution under section 26 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act which carries a sentence of up to 10 years imprisonment plus further charges for making false statements to obtain insurance. What some people don’t get is that at some stage this cute hoorism is going to come back to haunt them especially with the additional technology becoming available inngarda cars.

It was a private seller, would that help

If it was a private seller then they can ring Swansea and ask for a duplicate V5 which will arrive in 3-5 days and they can then send it on to you thereby eliminating the problem.

And back in reality land, that’ll never happen

To be fair he's a dealer, and it is stated on the V5 so he should have known better. Its his fault. (and a little yours too for not requesting the full V5)

Its not easy to get a V5 to the Republic, the garage will have to request a new one and send it onto you.

There’s no garage, it was a private sale.

Either way get previous owner to send off for a replacement. Much much easier.
