Contracting - Negotiating new rate before contract renews?

    My contract is ending in March, but as it's a rolling contract it will renew then as the project is ongoing.

    The rate I'm on is on the low end relatively speaking so I would like to negotiate a higher rate.

    I mentioned this to my agency but they said I should discuss it with the client first. Is this correct? I assumed that the agency needs to discuss it with the client and then I negotiate the new rate with the agency.

    Depends on the project, unfortunately remaining on the rate is probably the only option if they have a set burn rate forecast for resources, and your resource level hasn't changed, ie. are you doing tasks beyond the hired spec.

    Another option is to take the experience gained and go for another better paying contract.

    I am doing tasks beyond the hired spec (part of the reason I want to ask for a raise), so is this something I would need to clear with the client first?

    It's a nice project and work environment so making a move would be a last choice, but certainly will if the rate remains the same.

    The agent has the contract with the client not you. Tell you agent that you are putting up your rate and they can either choose to absorb it or pass it on to the client, their problem.
