I'm changing jobs soon but my current employer asked if I could give support as and when needed, in case anything comes up they are unable to deal with.

I have no idea how much I should be paid for this type of work? I would hope we're only talking about a few hours a week. Should it be an hourly rate, and if so, how much?

Take your preferred hourly rate (not what you're on now, but what the market rate is for this type of work and relevant experience) and add about an additional 35% I'd say. Remember you're doing them a favour.

That's fine if they have you back as a casual employee.

But if you'd be a contractor, then take the rate and double it. Remember that you will now be self employed so need to provide for your own tax, professional indemnity insurance etc.
