Citizenship Passport Question

    Hi

I am thinking about applying for Irish citizenship, probably on marriage grounds as that would be the cleanest route.

I know you have to send your passport with the application, but I've read somewhere (probably on here!) that the passport can be kept for up to six weeks! That's a worry to me. Does anyone know how long the passport is kept for verification?

Also - how is your passport returned? Is it through the ordinary post or can you pay to have it couriered back?

    TIA for any help! :)

Yes, they keep the passport for up to a month or two while processing your application. It can sometimes be longer if they're behind on processing, as well. In theory, you can contact them to have your passport returned urgently if you need it for an emergency, but that depends on being able to actually get ahold of them in a timely manner (good luck!), and it will put the processing of your application on hold until you send the passport back to them again. It should not be an issue not having your passport, though, as long as you don't need to leave the country; you'll still have your GNIB/IRP card in your possession to prove your right to reside here, as you don't need to turn in the original until your application is approved. Just time your application submission for a period where you won't need to travel abroad for a few months and you should be fine.

Just a comment - it may be easier to apply on the basis of residence than marriage. That way you only need to get supporting documents for one person.

Hi, did you end up submitting your application and getting your passport back in a timely manner? I am thinking about submitting, but nervous with covid delays that they could have it for months. Thanks!
