Starter car for new driver

Hey folks, my nephew is going to do his test soon and will get some kind of starter car. I'd assume with no insurance history he'd be angling towards low cc and reasonably recent cars (say 2011) from an insurance perspective.
He seems to like the i20 but also open to others e.g. Fabia.

I know from my own experience insuring older cars can be difficult and make moving insurance company very difficult.
I guess he has 2 options with maybe some overlap between them banger to start out with (useless when he start driving to work) or minimum 2011 that he could sell in a year or 2 with some residual value in it.

What are those i20 like, fairly reliable ?

That 1.2 ... would that be the "famed" 3 cylinder engine or a 4 pot?

The i20 engine is infinitely better.

Kia Rio is same thing but nicer, think current shape ran from 2011 or 2012

Doesn't have to be that new, my fella picked up a 08 Seat Ibiza fr last August for 2200 & 2k insurance with AXA

Interesting....was he insured before with AXA ?

No, not with AXA, all he had was 6 months with Aviva as a named driver as part of their learner driver program ( can’t think of what they call it off hand) which I extended for another 6 months, during this time he did his minimum required lessons plus 12 more, failed first test & passed second, then didn’t drive or was insured for over 2 years, he was 21 getting his own insurance on the Seat.

Get him to ask his mates who they are insured with, that’s how he ended up with AXA but definitely shop around

The “full service history “ is a bit bizarre from what I can see- lokkks like it was only serviced three times in nearly 9 years. Which regardless of the low mileage isn’t a great idea

I’d say there’s just a stamp missing, the intervals were 2 years on them IIRC, and I’d be surprised if someone who actually brings a 9 year old car to a main dealer didn’t stick to the intervals.

Lad here bought an 09 focus 1.4 last year. Around 1800 on a fresh enough full liscence, 4 months or so named driver, insured with liberty.

Focus was easy ran and insured. Is underpowered, which us no harm.

He wanted 1.0 - 1.2 max, looked at a 1.3 Mazda & going to 1.3 was funnily enough having a big enough effect on his insurance quote for him to limit the engine size to 1.2, fair enough, it was his money he had saved, both parents named on policy too, no difference to price if only one named though

It's more to do with insurance groups (ratings) than engine size necessarily.

The 07-15 Mazda 2 can be anywhere between groups 9 -16.

The similarly sized 06-11 Toyota Yaris is between 2 - 10.
