Or a curse in your opinion?

Only my opinion but certainly a gift. But I know others feel differently. Stages of our lives can foster conflicting answers.

What do you think yourself? Actually debate one of your threads for a change.

I think it can be great but when I look in town and see the homeless along with struggles of people I know, it seems to be filled with hardship, pain, suffering etc...

If by town you mean Drogheda, it is going through a very rough patch at the moment :(

If you're born healthy it is.

If not, it can be a struggle depending on your circumstances.

Absolutely agree with this. At the moment things are not easy for me all the time but I do feel that life is bringing lots of good things to me if I look at them the right way.

And when I go to town and see so many people socialising with friends and having a laugh. Or families enjoying comfort and love together. Or walk through the countryside watching and listening to the wonders about me. So much in life can be a joy. Go out looking for confirmation bias of your bleak view and and you'll find it. It takes little effort.

Struggles, pain and suffering exist but is life really "filled" with them?

It's a gift but for some it becomes a curse. They bring misery to everyone they touch.

“If there were a huge, deep ocean as big as this entire world with a golden yoke floating on its surface, and, at the bottom, there were a crippled, blind turtle who surfaced only once in a hundred years, how often would that turtle raise its head through the yoke?” Such an event would be extremely rare, but not as rare as gaining the birth of leisure and fortune.’'

I am not a Buddhist, but I have long loved this metaphor from one of their sutras for the improbability of a human existence and thus why it is so precious. It is almost crazy that we exist at all.

No one ever said life had to be easy, its a constant slog of bills, work and running to keep still, make the best of it and try and put something away for a holiday and retirement and hope you live long enough to enjoy a few stress free years with your loved ones

Life is like a game of cards. Life and a card game both depend on how good or how bad the hand that you get dealt is.

Life is a gift. Sometimes the journey through it can be a curse. The trick is to appreciate the good, learn from the bad and move on.

I wouldn't consider Life to be a gift as such. That suggests some gratitude is required to someone or some higher power. Considering the sheer amount of pain and distress, that most people experience through their lives, I wouldn't consider it a gift exactly deserving of gratitude.

At the same time though, I'm thoroughly enjoying my life. Plenty of downs, a few ups, and far more moments of contentment, especially as I get older.

Life is a gift and a curse and everything in between, depending on what's going on in someones life at any given moment. Everyone faces challenges, so it's important to recognise the good times and soak up every bit of happiness and contentment as they happen instead of taking things, or people, for granted.

It's a gift and not something to be taken for granted.

It can be tough going but that's just the way it goes. Makes you appreciate the good times more.

Life is a gift. Right now is a gift, that's why they call it the present.

Being human is a gift. If I'm going to exist on the planet, I'd hate to be a blue bottle or dung beetle. Being a human is a pretty neat stroke of luck.

Yeah, depending upon your circumstances is the key phrase there, because whether or not life is or isn’t a gift isn’t necessarily dependent upon being born healthy either. Plenty of people are born who are generally considered born unhealthy, and they still have the capacity to consider life a gift that has been bestowed upon them through advances in science, technology and medicine, and societies attitudes to people who are disabled of course - they aren’t generally considered better off dead nowadays. Only a small minority of people are of that opinion.

I do think life is a gift, though I can understand why some people are of the opinion that it’s a gift horse when they’re peering into it’s mouth :pac:

Breath in - breath out, sun comes up - sun goes down, the tide comes in - the tide goes out, dark - light, black - white.

Life is everything - in it's entirety, it is neither a gift - nor a curse, and it is both a gift - and a curse.

Life is a utility for self-replicating molecules (genes in our case) to perpetuate their existence. Call it a gift to the all the people and animals out there that are suffering horribly for nothing.

Greed dictates life and who has what quality of life.

Don't expect anything from life, just be grateful to be alive.

Disagree. Totally. We can overcome any thing. Fatalism is an excuse . Life is a gift. A huge gift

As a great Irish poet once said:

..... don't fight it. Life is a rollercoaster. Just gotta ride it.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

OP Lookit, I see there are a few literature fans on this thread already.

I think you should get your self an actual paperback copy of

    Adrian Mole, The Capuccino Years

    by Sue Townsend (rip)

And get more time off the smartphone / tablet / pluter while you're reading!

    Yes, objectively speaking, it is...

And btw Raiden Tangy Maze, confirmation bias is an applicable concept on both sides of this topic.

Life just is... and the point of life is to live it. Anything else really is just conjecture.

The moment you claim to understand it, or to have mastered it's many complexities... you have assumed one of the most common and arrogant positions any person could take in this life! (Part of the reason those of a religious persuasion irritate me greatly) ;)

Life is a gift? From who? A god or whatever spiritual whatnot you substitute there?

F*ck that. Life is. Make of it what you will. Stop looking for meaning behind life, because there is none.

All life must have a meaning. Unhealthy people exist to remind healthy people how lucky they are to have health. It's amazing how people simply forget this and waste their health away.

It sounds totally unfair towards people that are unheathy by nature, perhaps there is a meaning in their existence which we can't understand.

I think life is a contrast, both a gift and a curse. The world can be a beautiful place or hell at the same time depending where you are. Not to mention that the joy of a birth is contrasted by the pain of a death.

It really is winning the cosmic lottery to experience life as a sentient being, for a briefest of moments in the grand scheme of the Universe, that can look to the stars in the night sky with a sense of awe.

Life is the greatest gift we could ever hope to have - cherish the good moments.
