Using Sky+ box minus sub

Is there a way to get Irish and UK FTA channels on a Sky+ box which has no active subscription?

Cancelled my service with Sky today and I believed RTE et al would work away once the card was removed and the box restarted. Appears not to. I do still have basic UK channels though.

Irish channels are sub only on the Sky satellite. You will need to get an aerial for the Irish channels

    Irish channels require a subscription.

    No.

You would be best advised to get a 'combo' FTA set top box and have an aerial fitted.
Lots of threads on Boards about such STBs.

Have an aerial fitted and plug it straight into your TV. Retain the sky box for the UK FTA channels.

Yeah and put up with the frustration of jumping from one to the other ...... and being unable to record anything from Satellite (although the HDD is still there and powered up) .... and all the other frustrations that a Sky+HD box provides without a current subscription.

Thanks all, didnt realize Irish channels would be sub only.

Have a LG smart tv bought last year. Plugged in a digital antenna I had on an old lcd tv and tuned in the Saorview stuff. Grand. Then I noticed the back of the TV had a coax connector so I plugged the Sky dish directly into the TV and managed to tune in a lot of digital channels (mainly dross but does have ITV, BBC and C4 HD)

I might go with this for the time being but it's a little cumbersome in that the only way I can see the Irish and UK channels on the TV's menu screen is by going into a "filter" menu and choosing either "Antenna" or "Satellite"
Would anyone with an LG happen to know if that's the only way to do this or can both connections be merged into one channel menu?
