Alfa 159 1.9 diesel EGR valve

    Hello
Alfa 159 1.9 diesel 189k kms EGR valve

A friend was complaining of intermittent loss of power below 3000rpm in his Alfa so I offered to clean the EGR valve. (Very easy to access on this model)
Coated in soot but not clogged. Valve was bit sticky, solenoid pin moving freely. A previous owner had fitted a restrictor plate.

What concerns me is the end of the solenoid was drilled - I assume the plunger was seized at some point and this was to free it.

    My questions are:
How can I test that the solenoid is working correctly? Apart from attaching a 12v supply to it which isn’t feasible at the moment.
Is the operation of the valve detectable when driving - e.g different engine note, seeing the indicated mpg plummet?
What determines when the egr valve opens? How often does it operate?

I’m not familiar with diesels. I suppose if the solenoid had failed a blanking plate would have been installed not a restrictor.
    Thanks

No, but symptoms point to EGR according to online info - and the car had been idle and doing short trips in recent months.

Further research tells me EGR operates continually at low revs. It’s a bit clearer to me now. I think I was confusing that SCR regeneration malarkey with EGR operation.
I’ll wait to see what the driver reports after some driving.

I’ll give the MAF a clean too once I get some spare clips but for now I’ve done my good deed.
