Is this illegal age discrimination?

Hi, i noticed this job advertised. It's not of interest to me personally but there is a line in it that caught my attention:

"Applicants must be 18-30 years of age."

    https://beat102103.com/jobs/camp-canada/

Is the upper age limit considered to be age discrimination?

It appears to be a Canadian job subject to Canadian and not Irish law so the answer should be under those terms.

    I couldn't tell you.

It's being advertised on an Irish radio station and their website. I would have thought that it would be subject to legislation in this jurisdiction.

Then yes it is subject to the country its being advertised in.

It's a summer camp, temporary and that age group fits the general profile of such employees. Can't see the fuss about it.

    That's not the point.

It says the applicants 'must be' between 18 & 30 rather than 'preferably be'. Small differences in wording can mean everything in the law.

The visa required to do the job has an age limit so anyone over 30 that isn't a Canadian citizen can't do it

Thanks for clearing that up. I was surprised to see it worded that way.

It's probably not illegal here anyway as they have a legitimate aim.
For example, a requirement for job applicants to have worked in a particular industry for ten years may disadvantage younger people. Indirect discrimination can only be justified if it is a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim.

This is a case of stupid employer.

They should just advertise the job, without the age limit, and bin the CVs of the people aged 30 and older...

This is shows the stupidity of such a law, it just creates an illusion... it does not matter what the law says, no employer is going to recruit someone they don't want, they just have to go through a few more hoops to achieve it and lots of applicants waste hours applying for jobs they are not even in the running for.
