Suggestions for Sun Break in May

    Hi all,

I'm looking for some suggestions as to a break for myself and wife in late May - currently looking at the week of the 25th. It will be just the 2 of us and it will be for 4 or 5 nights. She's expecting so drinking and nightlife aren't big considerations.
Spain is where we are looking mainly - but am open to France or Italy (or anywhere thats a sub-3-hour flight).
Italy she would probably like to hold off on until after the baby but if it made sense she'd do it.
Have previously been to Nerja, Denia, Valencia, Nice, Monaco, Villamoura, Caiscais, Lagos (portugal) - and really liked all those.
That kind of low-rise, coastal town with nice restaurants - to try and put it in a nutshell.
If you have any you'd like to share I'd appreciate your input.

    Something slightly different

Croatia - fly into Dubrovnik, stay in Cavtat, near airport, beautiful little village - ferry to Dubrovnik if you want the day trip.

I stayed down the coast between Cavtat and Dubrovnik - Sheraton Dubrovnik Riviera in Mlini (absolutely loved the area).

Personal choice, would not recommend staying in Dubrovnik - extremely busy but nice to be close enough to visit for a day.

If you are only going for a few days, then I’d suggest the least amount of travelling, so somewhere with a direct flight.

If you are used to Spain, have you considered Mallorca?

    Lagos Portugal .

Quiet , lovely walks / beaches. Great restaurants. Very reasonable and an hour away from Faro airport.

Yes, that's basically what I'm after. What with her being due, minimal travelling and plonking ourselves by the pool would be the order of the day.

Yes, a lovely place. Was there last June - 6 in Lagos, 4 in Villamoura. Both very nice. Though I've ruled out returning this year. Even in June we found it quite chilly in the evening.

Consider when your wife is due, a lot of walking may be torture for her

    best of luck with it

Thanks for all the suggestions thus far.
In relation to the places in Portugal - does Portugal in general not be quite chilly in the evening? Thats my experience of it at least. So i'd think May in Portugal would need a light jacket.

Have to say, Cavtat is the current leader of the pack.

I was in Portugal at the end of September last year for 2 weeks which I assume would be smilar to May and it was lovely and warm in the evening, eating outside in T-shirts at 10 pm.

    Crete
    Chania or Rethymno

    Two lovely foodie cities

Hire a car and explore the lovely villages

Portugal in May weather wise can be chilly and occasionally wet. Definitely not guaranteed sun and warm weather. Malaga and the general costa Del sol would be a safer bet IMO

Dubrovnik is lovely but would be a bit wary of it with a pregnant partner. Hard to avoid lots of walking, steep steps, holes in footpaths etc. It's a lovely place but it has been hindered a bit over the years by its location in the Balkans. Questionable weather that time of year also.

Just a personal choice, but if you do go I'd skip Cavtat and stay in Dubrovnik itself - not right in the old town but there are plenty of nice hotels in Dubrovnik but outside the old town that would suit. It seems a shame to go that close to a beautiful town like Dubrovnik and then stay out at the airport in Cavtat.

Portal Nous/Portals in Majorca has excellent restaurants, nice beach and a very swanky harbour to stroll around in the evening. Only 20 minutes by cab from the airport as well.

I'd be thinking italy. Bologna or maybe somewhere in liguria...Alassio is gorgeous.

Menton is very nice and not too far from Nice.

Looking at where you've been and considering your wife is pregnant, Sicily is a great choice.

Great value, great food, but more importantly a pregnant lady is treated like a queen over there.

    She will love it.

We have booked Cambrils for April. Got a great half board deal for €85 per night for two people in a hotel in the old town. Fly in to Barcelona Reus with Ryanair and a 15 minute taxi ride to the hotel.

Head to Majorca to Soller. Travel on old wooden train from Palma (Place Espana) direct to Soller old town. Continue on the narrow gauge railway to Soller Port to stay.

Fly to Ibiza and head to Santa Eularia. Beautiful little resort with great Marina. Visit the Hippy Market and Ibiza Old town by bus.
