Hi my friend is in an awful state . She bought a house 2 months ago and she just got her electric bill . The bill was for €1200 . She queried the bill and was told that the bill was from the previous occupants and she would have to pay it even though she registered as the new owner with her supplier . Can you please advise on this . Thanks

    Hi reddanmm,

Thank you for getting in touch.

As we don't have the full details of what happened here, we can just provide general information. Please note we can just advise on Electric Ireland's policies and not those of any other provider.

Balances are not carried forward when a new person is registered at a property. If a customer receives a bill in the name of the previous occupier, they are not responsible for this bill.

A customer is responsible from the date and reading given (or agreed to) when they open their account. If there is a period where the property was not registered, the new occupier should get in contact with the previous occupant, property owner or letting agent. In the case of a sale, this could be the auctioneers or solicitors responsible for the sale. The previous occupier or property owner should take responsibility for any usage and standing charges up until the new occupier gets the keys.

We recommend that customers take a meter reading on the day they take over the property, so that there can be no confusion around usage.

Please advise your friend to get in touch with their name, address, contact number and account number as soon as possible. If they haven't done so already, they should also get an up-to-date meter reading and compare it to the reading on the bill.

    Kind regards,
    Aoife
