Hi, Feel free to move if im in the wrong place.

So i started a new job in November and never done anything tax wise(silly i know) anyway after two payments and paying emergency tax i contacted a friend in the tax office and she said she would sort it.

Anyway i recieved my wages today and im still paying emergency tax,can someone please educate me on the correct procedure when starting a new job regarding the tax situation.

I was unemployed for a few weeks but doing a few hours work here and there(paying tax) and now im working full time an presumed everything was automatically done online by revenue now .

From what i can see revunue know i am now working full time but its seems im still on emergency tax ....any advice would be appreciated.

Since you can see your employment on your Revenue account, it's registered. Revenue stopped issuing updated RPNs for 2019 in early December so you would have stayed on emergency tax for the rest of 2019. Any payments made in 2020 should be under your 2020 RPN which should be on the standard cumulative basis meaning no emergency tax for 2020. You should talk to your employer on that one.

In order to get your 2019 emergency tax back you'll need to file an EForm 12 for 2019 via your Revenue account after the middle of January.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply,so does that mean the payment i received today 2nd jan would have been processed in 2019 late december and there fore subject to emergency tax and my next payment in a fortnights time should be at the normal tax rate?

Should be. Check with your employer to ensure they have the latest RPN for you.

If ur latest RPN still has you at emergency tax, check if revenue have an outstanding issue to be resolved from when you were not working. Employer cannot take you off emergency tax unless they are instructed to do so by Revenue via the RPN system (this is the new version of tax credit certificate).

if its taxback from 2019 you are expecting you won't get it through payroll tomorrow - you will need to apply to Revenue for anything prior to this actual tax year.

I done all that last year. It wasn't in my pay today anyway.
