Insulating Cable Wall

Hi, Our gable wall is north facing and has a side passage. It is very cold. Options are 27mm internal insulation boards - would this look ok with the stairs as in with the surround that runs up along the stairs (not sure of correct term for this)? Other option is to externally insulate the gable wall but wondering ball…
