Flat Roof

    Hi all,

    Appreciate your advice.

The edge of the flat roof where the flashing meets the wall (see picture) has leaked for the first time in 50 years I think. The gutter above was blocked and a focussed stream of water hit one particular spot and it leaked through - gutter fixed.

So I put on a bitumen/fibreglass repair - needed to get it from woodies sharpish. It worked - no more leak. But I’ve previously used cromapol - an acrylic fibreglass repair product and I prefer to use that but couldn’t get it quickly - I know have some.

I’m asking if I can paint the acrylic over the bitumen, should I remove the bitumen and then paint the acrylic, or just leave it alone.

    Thanks all.

That looks like an awful job. Why isn't it wrapped over the front edge of the roof.

Well I accept the rebuke of my DIY job but the flashing was done 50-60 years ago and to be fair it only just started leaking. I check the flat roof every summer and this happened because of a gutter overhead that was full and water dropped directly on it. Plan to have a roofer out in the next few months to give me an assessment.

But the question was whether I can put the acrylic fibreglass over the bitumen that I put down - or would the adherence be poor?

It won't adhere well to that no. I wouldn't bother. Just to temp patch job. But if be getting that roof re done. If theres living space below it could be also sorts of rot around those edges.

Or is it a concrete roof ?

    Good advice - thank you.

And good call on the rot - it’s at the side of that wall. See pic. Yes - it’s a concrete roof. What’s your thinking about the concrete roof.

The rebuke was on the original roof (I assume!) as the flashing should extend over the edge and down the sides.

Unless you are saying you did that 50 years ago also?
